Basically the mics take otherwise inaudible energy waves and converts them to sound. So an example would be EMF radiation, a type of wave that all electronics give off. Normally these waves are inaudible, but special mics can essentially transpose them, this is horribly butchered but like keeping it simple, to human hearing ranges. So while the mics cannot record a conversation, they can record a whole new world of sound sources.

I have a composition where I literally just taped like 5 of those types of mics to my phone and leave a recorder on all day. Got some gnarly sounds when text messages/other information would come in. It might just be because I have been a sound artist my whole life, but these types of mics really help with your understanding of how electronics work, seeing how the more processing/energy being used, the louder and more dense the sound is. So like when information was being sent to my phone, I could hear the text message being beamed in if that makes any sense.

The much cheaper alternatives to the type I use are actually advertised to record phone calls. If you tape them to your phone's speaker, it will actually record the conversation, but not through the speaker, through the actual electromagnetic radiation the speaker is giving off!

All i've done is kinda messed around with audio samples in audacity, stuff like power tools and wierd electronic buzzy beepy noises slowed down a ton and mixed with other stuff to make creepy ambient tracks
I like using numbers stations in particular. They're spooky

I actually buy broken radios to get super noisy white noise. Also I do really stupid shit like try to build really awful electronics and see if I can mic them.

For creepy music just play everything in whole tone scales or, if you want even creepier feelings, microtune random notes to be slightly off. Then just have lots of spooky found sounds and stuff in the background and you got instant horror ambient.

I don't really know what a whole tone scale is. I have like, no knowledge of how to actually play or make music, I just fuck around with stuff in audacity until it sounds cool :v:
