• DISCUSS: Was Minecraft better before its fulll release?

1.6/1.7 beta was the best version.
Remember when Notch's vision for it was "Infiniminer Meets Dwarf Fortress"? And then how he disappeared for like 6 months once the money started rolling in?
I hate how the world generation was fucked with the adventure update. It was awesome when you found some physically impossible structure and wanted to build a base out of it but now it's pretty much generic flatland. You can still make cool stuff yourself but it just sucks the excitement out of the exploration. The hunger, enchanting and the end were fucking stupid as well. I'm fine with hunger if it's properly implemented but in Minecraft it only serves to piss you off by being inconvenient to deal with and being a lazy shitbag of a healing mechanic. What I mainly found better about the pre-release versions was how shit actually got done, there were updates every week but now they take an eternity and it's usually some stupid shit that was done by mods at least six months ago. [editline]16th September 2013[/editline] I've just played it again and noticed the performance is just getting worse and worse and worse. I have fucking lag in Singleplayer mode, I mined a coal block and 6 seconds later it got rubberbanded back.
Horrible optimization by 1.8, somewhat of a bad community base and making a game thats premise was simple and making it overcomplex with shit like end boss fights, hunger meters, and tons of new items that never really needed to be added.
The gameplay has been more or less ok, definitely some questionable additions but also some very welcome ones; I think the reason why Facepunch tends to be a bit astray to Minecraft is gradual worsening of the community which is inevitable, due to the inflating amount of devices and sales it receives to access to. And the community does matter to the quality of a game, at the end of the day, because it affects your multiplayer experience.
I haven't played since the achievements were released. I'd always set it to peaceful and build.
I remember when I first got Minecraft, 1.5.1 beta. I remember turning peaceful mode off and getting scared shitless by a zombie, having a whopping 10 fps and making literally everything out of dirt. [editline]16th September 2013[/editline] I think I miss many of the old bugs now :(
I had the most fun before survival MP was even a thing, in creative MP with my friends building giant retarded structures.

Where so much of their fanbase is so rabid and retarded, they have no idea what to do next. So they just throw shit at the wall and see what sticks. With Sonic it's like "ok, we'll make him a werewolf in this game! Yeah, ok, that seemed to do well, now let's make a game where all the characters fight with swords!" Similarly, minecraft is now like "Uh, fuckin... I don't know, horses? How about, uh... A potion system!"
I don't get the same fun vibes as I did back in the beta 1.4~ era, hopefully the 1.7 update can fix some of that.
My biggest beef is how goddamn boring the landscapes are now. Pretty much the only thing I see in recent versions is endless hilly forests and ugly-ass swamps.
This is what we're going to get in the next update if the experimental Amplified worldtype is kept inside the game. Just think of the Farlands from the early versions of the game but in a playable and less laggy state.
i've been playing since infdev and honestly it's gone to shit. what was originally a fun game about being creative turned into some stupid RPG bullshit. servers used to be about just having shit not blown up and having fun playing minecraft, now it's nothing but "PVP!!! SUPER RPG!!!!! HUNGER GAMES!!!!" the world generation sucks, it's fun to build around an alpha world with it's simple forests, cool mountains and small islands. secret friday updates used to provide more content every week then four months of jeb hyping up horses ever will. then again maybe i'm just bored of the game.
I enjoy it now just as much as I used too (I've been playing since the first released version, when it was browser based and there were like 3 block types). I play it for different reasons now though. Originally it was for the sense of adventure and mystery, but now I like to play it to try to optimize to the extreme. I can understand why people stopped liking it, but I still do. You could always give some mods a go, there are a shitton of them

Get rid of "The End" and everything associated with it, and we might have a great game again.
I think the addition of 'spells' and 'enchanting' ultimately killed the experience for me, alongside the convoluted hunger system. It sucked out anything that felt challenging. It just turned into a slugfest where everyone would bumrush to get the most powerful weapon whilst hogging food. I liked it when, if someone had Diamond gear, they were god. Not if they had a XxX3000XxX Fire +40 Damage +15 Tactical Sword like they do now.
All the variables with potions and enchanting made it too complicated for a game that should be simple like Minecraft
I remember from the Alpha days when we would fuck with the biomes and build absolutely impossible worlds. Spells confused the fuck out of me. The equipment seemed to take up more space than anything. They were so hard set on an ending that they never noticed nobody really cared. Once we discovered how awesome of a sandbox it was we could care less if there was an ending or not. One of the few things I do like in the full release is the improved mob AI. Surprised the fuck out of me when a zombie saw me from a hill over, walked AROUND the ravine and went after me. Was too used to them walking up to and over the edge of the ravine to their death. At least we no longer have the leaf decay bug.
At school we're all going to the lab at lunch to play on LAN, maybe it will be faster to set up camp with more people.
While you guys all look at Minecraft from a Survival Perspective, it seems better from other points of views too, like a creative point of view. From Creative mode, now I have more better looking blocks to use for my massive buildings, or from a Redstone Engineer's Point of View, I can do more things with the addition of hoppers, and the ability to place tnt using a dispenser. It all depends on point of view if Minecraft is better or not back then, and in my opinion, it's better now
-snip-
Too much unnecessary stuff added. It's overwhelming the amount of crap there is in the game now. That's what mods are for. Also it's the kind of game that gets less and less the fun the more you play it. Amazing at first, but three years later it's getting old.
The amount of resource farming needed to play with all of the game's additions is just stupid. It's also lost the feeling of wanting to explore the world since it's so easy to cheat.
This thred is reminding me of minecraft forum...
Minecraft died with the 360 version and everyone and their mothers making minecraft Let's Plays all over the fucking place. Now the fanbase is just 10 year old kids copying their idol ubehaxernova or tubusuos instead of having a half decent indie game oriented fanbase as well. Also Minecraft killed the indie game, since nowadays it feels like nothing but another fucking COD.
Endermen were a lot scarier before they were "nerfed." You look at them and they just teleport somewhere random instead of slowly approaching you every time you look away. Not only that, the new teleporting made them way more unpredictable and as a result, ridiculously OP. It feels more like a cheap death than a struggle. Also, 1.7.3 was the last good update in my opinion.
Maybe it's just nostalgia but I miss playing the alpha builds, perhaps a bit before the Nether update was released. The game seemed so much simpler and I enjoyed it a lot at that time. Now I get bored as soon as I start a new world in the game.
1.8 officially ruined the game
I fucking loved the old Alpha Generator, you could get some really badass landscapes, On one of my Near-First worlds, i discovered a massive volcano-like-island with a valley within it, Unfortunately i lost the world awhile ago, Hopefully the new generator will add fantastic landscapes again.
I miss the days of sitting down, firing up Beta 1.7, and working on my nuclear reactor in IC2. Of course i'm burned out on the game, there haven't been any good mods in ages, RP2 still isn't updated as well, which i only played with for a short while, made a missile base with a working silo and blast doors, i loved the RP2 frames, you could do so much more with them. I'd say that current Minecraft is boring and kinda shitty, still lacking features that are damn near essential, such as actual combat and not "beat the shit out of a creeper with this wooden sword so it doesn't erase my front porch".
It wasn't the only issue I had, but I personally pinpoint my souring with Minecraft with when the auto-fire-hail-of-arrows bow was nixed. Being able to reenact 300 just by holding down the attack button was hilariously fun, the lack of realism was one of the real charms Minecraft had in the first place (might as well "fix" being able to swim up waterfalls while you're at it), and the new bow mechanics were obviously done to ape the hyped revamp of archery in the then-upcoming Skyrim. Come to think of it, Skyrim may actually have been Minecraft's downfall in an odd way. I'm looking at you, Ender Dragon
