Gurren Lagann is also a stupidly fanservicy anime, but it's enjoyable because it doesn't have its head up its own ass about it. What is the point of saying "it's played for laughs"? Most fan service of that variety is played for laughs as well as titillate, it doesn't give it a free pass to say "it's not fan service". Judging by the porn you can find after a quick Google search I'm dead certain that it titillates as well!
I never said it wasn't fanservice, just played in a hilarious (Your Mileage May Vary) fashion How about we just say: Some people will like it, some people will not. Give it a try, If you like it, Fine, If you don't, Fine. Then leave it at that and let people form their own opinions on Haruhi and all the others. Slice of life seems to be hit and miss with most people [editline]24th May 2012[/editline] I think we've gone off track here

Otherwise people would just list every anime they can think of.

High School of the Dead is hilarious. It basically a generic gore and boob filled zombie anime. It's terrible and that's why it's funny.
Some people love School Days, some people hate it. But it has no place in that list [editline]23rd May 2012[/editline] Same with Lucky Star and K-On
School Days can burn in a fire. None of the characters are likable, the main guy I wanted to see get the shit beat out of him. First he is a shy guy, nothing interesting, who probably hasn't kissed a girl, then he turns into some magical fucking machine that girls find irresistible. They should of just made the VN into a hentai, that would give it at least some excuse to make such a shitty show. :v:
Fanservice comes in many forms, not just "lol tits and panty shots". Luckystar is, quite literally, one of the most fan servicey anime around, since it constantly is pandering to audience with in-jokes, references, and commentaries on anime culture itself. It does not have any purpose except to pander to those who enjoy anime as a medium, and that's fine, but it alienates those who would like to get into anime or are not into anime as much as its target audience AND it's very quiet with no action or character development (aside from "lol Kagami had lesbian dream lolololol"). In my opinion Lucky Star fails as a story, in any medium, since, well, there is none to speak of, and everything that is focused on is meant to solicit an "oh that's happened to me before" or an "Oh I get it". It felt like it was trying to capture the magic in a bottle that was "Azumanga Daioh" by copying the narrative structure of simply not having one, but failing to understand that "not having a structure" and "not having a story" are two completely different things. Instead filling it with references and in-jokes. Trying to defend Haruhi as not full of fan service is a futile task as anyone in their right minds can pull up any segment of Mikuru Asahina and Haruhi herself up from the the show and see the lesbian... I don't know what to call them since they're not attracted to each other but you know what I'm saying. And yes, I know there's more to it than that. I understand that it's a deconstruction of cheesy anime cliches in some respects, but even in doing so alienates those who are not quite that obsessed with them. Yes, I think they're both garbage. Haruhi less so, but anything that insists you not watch half of it isn't worth watching all the way through (and I unfortunately did, hating it every single second due to how obtuse the story writing is).
If one doesn't mind reading a bit, I recommend reading the Haruhi light novels then watching the film. The Novels are far better than the anime series and the movie was fantastic.
NG:E is one of hell of a mindfuck, but that's Gainax for you
High School of the Dead is hilarious. It basically a generic gore and boob filled zombie anime. It's terrible and that's why it's funny.
It's a guilty pleasure. If you're into low budget american zombie films, then it is the animated equivalent.
Christ you're a pain in the arse Meant out of the argument but now I'm back in, gg
There was no argument it was essentially "I don't like this show" "Well I do!" But you really shouldn't say you're out unless you will actually leave.

I am not discussing whether an anime is good or bad, and I am not discussing whether fan service is good or bad, what I'm discussing is what will alienate people from Anime as a whole upon having THOSE as one of their first experiences. People can have their own opinions, and while I respect that one can not argue with the fact that fan service is present in one way or another in said anime. Fan service is literally pandering ONLY towards a certain audience, and that's ok, but shows like luckystar, which are entirely fan service, will not be funny for first time viewers since they are not part of the target audience.

Yeah, there are many types of arguments. But the one you were having is comparable to two people arguing about whether or not pickles are good. And one of the two happens to be allergic to pickles while the other has fond memories of eating them while talking to his now deceased mother. It wasn't going anywhere

Steins;Gate Puella Magi Madoka Magica Bokurano Bakemonogatari Berserk (if you like violence) When They Cry
Gurren Lagann Cromartie High School Durarara Bobobo (hit/miss)
Hey now, I was reasoning with my argument and I had a point. He was just "I like it stop badmouthing the stuff I like"
I realized that a bit too late and you were against something inside of the pickle, not the pickle itself :v:
Anime I've seen and liked: Anything by Satoshi Kon (one of my favourite directors of any medium) Cowboy Bebop Samurai Champloo Studio Ghibli Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Mushishi Gurren Lagann Welcome to the NHK (barring some really, really, really stupid parts) Azumanga Daioh FLCL Grave of the Fireflies Excel Saga Higurashi Death Note Blood: The Last Vampire Anime I've seen and disliked: Lucky Star Haruhi Highschool of the Dead Recommended manga: Berserk Anything by Junji Ito Franken Fran Gantz
im not a fan of anime but yeah Fullmetal alchemist /brotherhood Now [editline]24th May 2012[/editline] Oh and Soul Eater
If you want something thrillery like Death Note go for Steins;Gate.
I've watched a bunch of random things but I must especially recommend these (in no particular order): Hellsing (OVA version is better, but the other one isn't bad) Berzerk Gurren Lagann Fullmetal Alchemist (I haven't seen the Brotherhood series yet but hear it is also quite good) I also watched Elfenlied, and though it was interesting, I can't really make heads or tails of the show.
Let's see.... If you're into horror: Another Sci-Fi: Planetes Haruhi Some others: Angel Beats! Eden of the East Sora No Woto Black Lagoon Baccano! Canaan [editline]24th May 2012[/editline] Oh yeah I got some movies too If you like classics there's Howl's Moving Castle Tokyo Godfathers Secret World of Arietty Paprika
Love Hina!!!
I'd like to recommend Elfen Lied. If you can find the Manga to it, read that instead of watching the Anime.
I'd like to recommend Elfen Lied. If you can find the Manga to it, read that instead of watching the Anime.
This. The anime was terrible, but I really enjoyed the manga. Same applies to whoever said Rosario + vampire on the last page. Themanga is far far better than the anime
