Wow, I finally got around to finishing Space Dandy, what a great show. Is it true they're planning to work on a movie? I'd love to see a bit more, or at least a series that has similarities with it's humor.
I certainly hope they make a movie. I have watched that series through and through a couple of times. Including on psychadelics
holy christ

It's a pleasure to watch, one of the reasons being that it branches out onto something different every episode. I appreciate that and the fact it pokes on certain tropes a lot.
I'm kinda looking for more series with that kind of stuff. I know the OP has a list of things in different genres, but I wish I had the time to really look into them all. I rarely get the time to even sit down and watch stuff anymore.
Recently ordered a figurine of the Dandy man himself. I'm so excited to get him!
Rule of thumb: don't talk to people about anime offline.
Chances are they're either a massive casual or an outrageous weeb.

I overheard this small white guy at college trying to tell this dudebro about how NGNL is the GoAT and trying to explain to him what a NEET was. I've always thought about going to the club but I'm scared what kind of people I'll meet there.

Don't.
I only joined the one at my uni before the local tavern is a sponsor and members get 25% off everything.
I wouldn't touch my club if it weren't for the fact I have a few new friends there.

Yeah, I was surprisingly recommended the show by a friend who doesn't even like anime. He just saw it on Cartoon Network and I looked it up. You can safely say my mind was blown.
I find myself craving animation with high art value and lots of style. Kill la Kill, Gurren Lagann, FLCL, Steven Universe, Beck, etc.

i went to an anime club once
filled with neckbeards and all sorts of awkward motherfuckers that send the cringe right down your spine. i never returned past that day

im not joking when about five of them wore the same fedora, trenchcoat, and all were fat with neckbeards. absolutely surreal, i didn't used to think these people existed

Dunno if you've already watched them and this is a bad suggestion, but I'd recommend the shows that Masaaki Yuasa, aka the guy who made the really weird disembodied head Dandy episode, directed. Ping Pong The Animation, Tatami Galaxy, Kaiba, etc.

Please don't quote my huge block of images, it's painful to look at since they're already thumbed and can't get any smaller. Particularly since that's before I fixed my images so it's even taller than the original post.
But they're great, go watch them. They're all one-cours so they're good for marathoning if you insist on binging.

My bad I am fairly stoned and have been awake for quite awhile haha. Thanks for letting me know. I was wondering why my shit computer froze when I was swapping tabs.

Masaaki Yuasa is great. Watch Kaiba, Kemonozume, Ping pong the animation, Tatami galaxy, cat soup, mind game and Kick-heart.
Masaaki Yuasa is the kind of director who consistently makes such great and unique shows that I'm completely confused that the industry hasn't conspired against him to not let him make shows years ago.
I guess I'm used to directors who make one really good anime original and then never direct anything ever again.

I would turn around and leave. too much creepy for me. I take pride in being an otaku at heart but outwardly appearing very normal.
I take pride in being me which is code for cool.

I am watching the first episode of Ping Pong the Animation and it is blowing my mind. His use of depth perception makes it feel like live action camera set-ups.

yeah, too bad the publishers don't like his work though, man really has to struggle to get any shows made.

Has he had any big flops? I can see why the producers would hate something that doesn't try to conform to the generic demographics and pandering in the industry on top of being (mostly) originals. He must have a pretty solid track record if he could keep making shows. Tatami and Ping Pong seemed to sell well enough, I'm having trouble finding sales numbers for Kaiba and I can see Kemonozume selling poorly, although I haven't actually watched Kemonozume since I've been saving it for a rainy day so I'm mostly going by the few bits I've seen.

I wonder how Kickstarters would turn out if Japan didn't apparently strongly dislike the concept of crowdfunding. Under The Dog and Kick-Heart getting funded is nice but making more than short anime is expensive. I wonder how much money your average otaku could scrounge up considering how much they blow on BDs.
Certain things in Shimoneta seems uncensored in some other version

There's also clawhammer, their motto being "For those who aren't patient enough to wait for the good subs, but patient enough to wait for better video".
No, really.

I don't think he's successful enough to be of any interest to publishers as there is no guarantee that his next weird show will catch on, and even if it does it's highly unlikely to give any profits worth caring about. His works are also original so he's not helping anything sell but his own reputation.
The problem with crowdfunding is that even if they were able to fund the entire production that's also all they would be funding, (no problems included), and given the amount of money spent on it I'm not sure how many would be left that would then also buy the DVD/BD after being released that gives them profits.
And they would then also need to make enough profits to make a new show as crowdfunding several shows in a row at the cost of them... eh, people would quickly stop caring.

Ping pong was a manga adaptation.
