Every now and then Rahkshi lord messages me with some complaints about Tokyo ghoul:RE. I'm usualy busy with not doing anything so I blow him off. But later I come back to RE to see what he was talking about.
By god, he's right. How unfortunate is this series? Did they switch writer? Did he develop schizophrenia and just forget the story as he wrote. Was the writer brutaly killed and replaced by his four year old son? It's just a mess that's close to unreadable.

Okay, that latest Punchline episode was pretty awesome.
I did not imagine myself saying that when the series started.

Normally I try to go to bed at 8 - 10 pm, wake up at 6 or 7 am but sometimes as late 12 pm.
watched haibane renmei and angel beats
I really enjoyed haibane with its good character designs and original everything. I only found out afterwards the source was made by no other than yoshitoshi abe of serial experiments lain fame.
angel beats caught me off guard because I thought fast anime hates it but it turned out pretty good. Despite being a generic highschool anime, the settings, for all intents and purposes, intertwines with the totally non-curricular story well.
its execution is a bit beyond top notch

i think its bc there were a lot of problems esp in terms of budget, if you go back over and watch it again, its nothing like as good bc you notice all of the glaring flaws; see the scene where the[sp]factory blows up[/sp]and eevery explosion is the same explosion.
its one of those things that i think gets worse the more you think about it, which in the short term is fine, but not in the long term

Easy
spoilers for all Tokyo Ghoul's manga and Re, of course.
[sp]
First, Ken has amnesia. not only is amnesia a huge hack writer staple, but it's handled extremely poorly here. it's gotten to the point that Ken doesn't even have amnesia and is just crazy and split personality, at least amnesia would have had some logical sense. It's been months, fucking months, of teasing us with Ken coming back but nope, we're still fucking hanging with goddamn "Sasaki" and his merry band of who gives a fuck, which brings me to my next complaint.
No characters from the first season have been relevant at all, instead we're following a set of poorly developed, boring, ken clones. they have ghoul powers but aren't really half ghoul, what? This aspect of their character is so fucking stupid I can't get over it. Why do we need to spend an entire chapter on one character being transgender? Is that actually going to be relevant to the story ever again? I also can't even remember their fucking names they're so boring.
Tell me, what has actually happened in Tokyo Ghoul Re? we learned the backstory of some shit new characters, then they fought some ghouls. it's barely a sequel to the original, it has almost no story connection and is just wasting time for no good reason. Teasing us with what we could be reading instead, hey guys remember touka? she's in this chapter! (for three panels)
and what is happening is just baffling sometimes, Takizawa comes back from the dead as a half ghoul, sure why not? but then, out of fucking nowhere the CCG declares him SS rated. what? are you joking? he had done literally NOTHING to suggest he deserved one of the highest ratings in the series, I guess the ccg is just fucking psychic since he only shows ss rating levels of danger after getting the rating.
[/sp]
Re is fucking terrible, it fails as a sequel and as a standalone story, it just fails as a story overall.

[sp]The fact that Kaneki survived after being double-skullfucked by Arima's quinque is a miracle in itself, obviously it would come with some consequences, in this case amnesia. Yes, it's a bad plot device but it'll have its role in the story.
The quinckes squad are the reason why Kaneki wasn't straight up turned into a quinque or sent to Cochlea to rot for eternity (who else would fit the role of a mentor for individuals that the rest of the organization saw as monsters?). They are experimental weapons much like the Aogiri's half-ghouls that were in development before Kaneki's capture. They'll most likely play a large role in the war against Aogiri.
Writing characters off as shit before they've even had proper arcs is pretty stupid too.
Also, erasing Haise and bringing back Kaneki would mean Haise had zero narrative value. Why would you want Ishida to pull something as stupid as that? He has a purpose that is yet to be fulfilled
Kaneki losing his memory and now being a member of the CCG means the CCG perspective is now vastly dominant over the Ghoul-CCG balance that the original manga had. These circumstances effectively turn :re into a mystery manga, a genre you should not expect easy, quick answers from. The purpose of :re, the Clowns, the Aogiri, the two years we know almost nothing about - everything will be unveiled gradually.
As to why Takizawa was declared SS, I don't really remember. It was either easily annihilating an entire squad or Matsuri wanting an excuse to test Haise.
As you may have noticed, there are a lot of assumptions about future events in this post. Why? Because we're a mere 32 fucking chapters in
Look back at what happened in the original manga within the same 32 chapters. Exactly, fuck-all.
You could even argue that re:'s had a stronger start than TG.[/sp]
Ninja Slayer is slowly getting less clip-arty which is a good thing.
Some of the designs still really irk me though, almost specifically Naraku Ninja possessed Ninja Slayer. Why didn't they just use the manga design? It's literally perfect for the zany style Trigger is going for.
Finished katanagatari.
Pretty good really but yet again it never truly grabbed me. Pacing felt odd at one point but that is my fault as I somehow managed to skip episode 8 entirely.
It had a strong start then an okay middle and a pretty decent ending. [sp]I really liked him breaking all the swords and truly unchaining himself from all restraints. It helps that ever since I read hanachirasu I have a distinct fondness of watching people try to copy a supermove fail miserably because they simply don't understand its true nature. The story itself however just felt a bit too silly. This is by far the dumbest assassination plot I have ever seen so far anyway. With future sight (shitty future sight to be fair) and more then 100 years of planning you could probably put together a far more foolproof way to assassinate the emperor.[/sp]
I'd say the writing was pretty good overall and pretty witty. That being said I am entirely humorless usually so it could only get a couple of smirks out of me. That's still pretty good though.
I wouldn't recommend it as a first anime for sure though for two primary reasons:
A: Its good but its not top tier
B: A lot of its humor relies on making fun of and exploring common anime tropes and subverting expectations.
Soundtrack isn't something that I would listen outside of the anime probably but its incredibly fitting for the show itself.
I would rate the show a 7.7 Its good but if 10 years from now you walk up to me and say "REMEMBER KATANAGATARI!?" I would have to stop and think.

I can't judge the series on what it might become, I can only judge it on what it is now. and right now it's fucking terrible.
but I'll respond to your individual points now. (reminder that these are spoilers for tokyo ghoul and it's sequel manga re, can't be too careful about spoilers)
[sp]Yes, the amnesia had a reason, but this is fiction, Ishida did not HAVE to write it this way, but he did. arguing "but there was a reason for it" doesn't mean anything, it was a choice the mangaka made, nobody forced him to do this.
yet again, you justify the quinckes existence in the story by saying "they're plot relevent", I never said they weren't, I'm saying that the narrative around them is extremely poorly constructed, there are any number of reasons you could have written Ken to be saved by the CCG, them existing does not make them a well placed narrative point.
I'll call these characters shit because they are shit, I can't care about anything that happens to them at this point in time, will they become good characters later? Who knows, I can't see the future. but Right NOW, they are boring, shallow characters who don't actually have any fucking relevance to the overall plot, saving to do nothing but delay the actual plot.
Yes, erasing Sasaki would mean he had no narrative value, but had he never been in the plot to begin with he would also have had no narrative value but the overall story quality would be better! he's yet another plot delaying tactic, this entire series so far has essentially been filler.
I don't have anything to comment on for the ccg focus, I don't mind it in theory, Takizawa killed a lot of fuckin mooks that doesn't deserve SS.
Not a whole lot happened in the original in 30 chapters, except introducing the entire setting, main cast (who actually get decently fleshed out so we understand their personalities.) and having ken develop as a character, the entire arc with Mado which is super important ect.
nothing here feels relevant like that did, Haise can't get character development because inevitably he'll revert to ken mode anyways.

Vectorised a mask from Geass for practice. Somebody thought it was from bleach tho :v:
My initial thinking upon glancing at it was also Bleach, so heh
I seem to recall the first season of geass being quite good. Then the second absolutely ruining everything.
That style of mask (ignore the crop circles) is very popular in east asia (not sure specificaly where) so it's in a lot of anime. Especialy with the white and red colour scheme. I really wouldn't think it odd if someone thought it was from anywhere.

Should I read Tokyo Ghoul? The anime was pretty shit.
I just decided to read the spoilers as the series didn't sound all that interesting to me anyway.
Based off the impressions I got from it and others opinions its best to just wait until its a finished work. That way you can have others take the risk of it potentially becoming a resounding MEH.
Its not like I have run out of other stuff to watch for the time being so I might as well wait as the concept doesn't pull me in.
finally decided to give assassination classroom a shot. Watched the first episode. The main character sounds and looks somewhat like a chick but the subtitles keep saying he and him, so I don't even know. The show has a pretty interesting premise though. Not at all what I thought it would be about from the name.
e: i guess he sounds like a chick because he is voiced by one. But that doesn't explain the appearance.

welcome to traps
welcome to traps
I think trap sort of implies that people would find the person attractive and then find out they are actually a opposite gender of what they are attracted to. I just thought he was a chick (not an attractive chick) and then found out that he was a dude. Maybe further on it is revealed that he is actually a chick, but either way i don't really think he is attractive so, not a trap for me at least.

It doesn't. You thought it was a girl, it was a guy instead.
That's all there is to it.

He definitely falls into the "modern trap" style of trap, who aren't really traps but just bishounen with female voice actors.
[editline]18th June 2015[/editline]
but I don't know how you can deny he's a trap when you admit you thought he was a girl, what does personal attracting have to do it with it? tsunderes don't stop being tsundere because you dislike them.

well i'm accustomed to the term being used in reference to real people. Like someone posts a picture of a person and then people say they think they are pretty and then someone reveals that it was actually a dude all along so, "haha you are attracted to a dude." Like setting a trap and then people fall into it. Just my interpretation of an internet term that is not officially defined. I never considered it a term to refer to stylized drawings.
Long explanation short: It was just not a "trap" as I have previously interpreted the word. It also explains my use of "person" in my previous post where I used it instead of the word "character"
