Is Etrian even worth getting? Friend hates the series.
I think it is, yes. It's a very good series if you like first person dungeon crawlers
They can be kinda grindy but you get a lot of freedom in making your party usually, unless you play the Untold games which have a Story mode in them to make them more accessible.
If you like the idea of drawing your own map though and exploring huge dungeons full of big dangerous monsters you have to plan your movements around, you'll probably enjoy it
F O E F O E F O E F O E F O E F O E
Etrian's pretty great.
I know people abuse this comparison, but I think it's appropriate in this case.
It's the Dark Souls of turn based RPGs.
Enemies aren't there to slow you down or give you obligatory experience points like in most rpgs.
They're there to kill you. If you aren't careful, you WILL die, even in basic encounters.
Although there aren't enemy players that jump out and gank you.
FOEs take care of that.
Also map making is fun.
And the classes in Etrian Odyssey 3 are crazy.
Now, Etrian Mystery Dungeon is a completely different beast. Rather than requiring precise party coordination, it requires you to carefully choose which party member to control for that turn. It's frustrating sometimes, because you can't control your entire party for the majority of the time. You have to EARN full party control by fighting enough monsters in a given run. The game is easier to make up for it, though.
On the other hand, it's easier, so it's not as challenging, and thus less fun if you like "oh my god this is my 5th try fighting this one boss" difficulty.
On the other other hand, it's easier, so it's easier to get into.
If you play it, be prepared for entirely different gameplay. It's fun, yeah, but the only remnant of the Etrian series is the setting and powerful minibosses. (Even though the minibosses and bosses are easier than in Etrian proper.) It'll take some getting used to if you're expecting "Etrian Odyssey, but you can see your party" or something like that.
I do have to commend it on how hard it worked at getting the game mechanics to work with the story. Even if they probably should have left a few things just be game mechanics rather than setting mechanics.
They even acknowledge "turns" as a thing in this one.
To sum up Etrian Odyssey, you can and probably will have your entire party be wiped out by one of your first two random monster encounters. You can have five or six people in a party at once and this will still probably happen to you. You can also have a huge guild of characters to rotate in and out.
There's one thing that I really wish it didn't do though: the classic JRPG thing of when a party member dies they don't gain XP and fall behind the rest of the party. Because everybody levels up at the same rate and levels matter a lot, this is unbelievably frustrating for your party synergy.

Also the music is pretty cool.

That reminds me: they did something really nice in EMD.
Party members don't have to be in your party to gain experience. They gain partial experience if they're not doing anything, and gain near-full experience if you put them in a fort. So if you want to try out a new class in your dungeon party, you don't have to grind them up for nearly as long.
On the other hand, the AI... could be better.
And the rooms would be a bit better if they had walls or obstacles in them rather than just having corridors and empty rooms for 95% of the time.
also it would be nice if you could see enemy health
and if sovereigns weren't buggy
Nonetheless, I still think it's pretty fun.
someone has compiled every single weird noise Kumiko made throughout Euphonium into one webm

(the webm is safe, dunno about that warning)
and it's beautiful
I'm picturing Euphonium told entirely without words, with the only sounds made by the characters being random character grunting and noises. It'd be great.
watched Cobra The Animation: The Psycho-Gun ova
it's pretty good except for the bad cg and the lack of the colt python
I'm always weary of watching OVA's, they just are always so hit or miss, and for most of the ones I've seen they end up miss.
only played Etrian Odyssey 4 and it was good but it got boring after the 40-60 hour mark. Didn't even finish the game because it was 100% grinding with no pay off because the plot was near non existent, they recycled monsters a lot and the characters were about as interesting as cardboard cut outs.
i know the argument is that you're meant to use your imagination but this is 2015, we aren't playing text based games anymore. Using your imagination to a degree sure but there's hardly any character interactions besides fighting and occasional small events

A game that lasts 40+ hours before getting boring sounds pretty good to me.
I liked EO4. My only gripe with it was that it felt a lot easier than the earlier entries.
A game that lasts 40+ hours before getting boring sounds pretty good to me.
just checked it and it said 70 hours
i guess, just didn't finish it because i like doing side things like map out the entire overworld and dungeons. Got up to the last world I think and the enemies were resistant to physical attacks completely so fuck that
A game that lasts 40+ hours before getting boring sounds pretty good to me.
Sure if you want to just consider value for time spent. But if it gets boring before you complete a game then it isn't very good.

If you're playing a ten hour game and only half of it is fun then yes, that would apply.
But this is forty hours of "yes, i like this" that petered out apparently mainly due to the game just going on too long, then that's still a good game. The idea of "yeah, i got enough enjoyment out of this without finishing it" starts being valid when you like it for such an extreme amount of time.
To me time spent on games like that is only good if there isn't too much filler of useless things. Persona 4, while I love the game, is at a lot of fault for un-needly stretching itself out at times. All that grinding in dungeons was really shitty and probably adding it all up added at least 20 hours if you weren't going for the completionist ending.
oh yea EO4 had some great music too, wasn't expecting it but the music was incredibly comfy

if they put some effort into creating a more immersive world then it could of been great. In the game you find a hidden village in one of the dungeons and while the story dialogue that happens says it's a town, the actual in-game room is literally empty. It has no textures or objects or anything that makes it resemble a habitat.
You got me interested you bunch of nerds, which EO do I play out of the first three?

Go ask in the 3DS thread, you'll get more opinions there.
can't believe i bought a chaika mug i don't even drink coffee, i'm fuckin whipped by an anime girl
[editline]2nd July 2015[/editline]
anime shops shouldn't let you use credit i don't even need this shiro shirt
Last year I bought a mug with "COFFEE" written all over it. Even though I use it every day, I have yet to drink coffee from it.
Mugs are inferior to cups in every way.

The cons I've been to are all really mediocre. There's one decent one a year in my city that's coming up though, but that's only really good for video games. Every con I go to I hope to see at least one cosplay of a recently aired show, and I'm always disappointed. Casuals, the lot of them.
Since you're in the states you'll probably be fine.

I've been once and I'm traumatised for life.
The cosplays were real good though. Hell there was a small stage play by a local theater troupe.
once knew a person who went to sakuracon, never saw them again
