tbh I'd love to see an arena FPS implement crazy movement into it
lets just take a typical UT99/HL1DM/Quake/etc style arena shooter, but with secondary weapons that you can use that you set before you spawn.
It could work as this: You start with a standard set of guns as you do in the above shooters, but pre-select a tool 'gun' like an air cannon to launch yourself/enemies, a portal gun, a gravity gun, a goo/gloo gun etc that you use with a third trigger button
Bonus points for anti-gravity belts, jump boots, running shoes, weak shield belts as a powerup you can spawn with as well, giving you a special move-set. Bonus bonus points if the normal guns can be used for movement (Rocket jump, flak cannon jump, etc)
add some jumping pads, anti-gravity walls like in Prey (original) as well as a mechanic where you can do a flip like in Dusk and you have some insane garbage
UT2004 best online shooter
there was actually a tfc server up earlier with 9 people on it. not bots either. but i went to take a shit and when I came back the server was empty...... was it just a mirage???
also i just joined a russian half-life 1 dm server and my god i have not seen such angry people. i'm uploading the video soon but it is pretty much fucking gold
this being said though it'd have to be actually based around movement itself, and in a smallish arena. Not some huge area like tribes, but a big building/small landmass

I genuinely don't like ut2004
it's in a weird cycle of gaming where people are creating new tech but don't really know how to properly implement it
the game is an upgrade to UT99 but feels wacky and not right

normally games feel worse with age but ut99 was built in a time where they had the tech 100% figured out so it felt correct and true

Rainy day today some fat and small snails are out in the garden loving the conditions
After laying down for 30 minutes did nothing but make things worse, I decided to just say fuck it play Smite instead. Played the MOTD mode which was everyone using the Bob Ross skin.
The Joy of Bob Ross prevailed and now I feel a bit better. I even recorded the game. I'll post it later for funsies.

I have 0 nostaliga for UT2004 I feel it's just a faster, looser UT99 but I like that because you just bounce around at an insane pace, makes some of the more sniper rifle like weapons a bit useless but it's a lovely chaos.
and the design inconsistency at least visually makes sense
I feel there's a lot of games that hold up after 10 years than some games stand up after 5 and like you said it usually depends on the tech of the time but sometimes these out there ones are just as good if not better than these tech-perfect games

the server was so fucking laggy I could really only get kills with the tau cannon splash damage, any attempts at accurate sniping was hopeless, but somehow I still managed this silly shit anyways. I'll make a proper highlights vid tomorrow but for now here's a few clips
