How about Empire Earth? It's an (kind of) easy strategy game. It's like 8 dollars on GOG.com + Expansion Pack. For Tactical FPS games, SWAT 4 is also very easy to play in comparison to SWAT 3. If you're going to play next to her you don't even need to know most of the commands, just pressing F to tell people to comply. It might run well on a low-spec machine. If not, go for SWAT 3 then. If you like Space-themed Strategy games, consider picking up Galactic Civilizations 2 or Star Wars: Empire at War. They aren't co-op but you can do matches against bots online I think. If you're into retro games, might aswell try out Doom, certainly there are Co-Op modes in Skulltag. Quake is also nice. And as someone suggested some posts ago, Warcraft III, Sven Co-Op and Terraria are also good picks.
Warcraft III.
I second this. Warcraft III has tons of custom maps that are fun to play with two players.
SVEN CO-OP. Best mod ever.
If you can play together on one PC, I would say Audiosurf. My sister loves this game
LMFAO Girls seem to like L4D1/L4D2
Thirded. I have this female friend who usually never play games. A few minutes after arriving at me+friends' LAN-party she was practically begging if she could try out L4D2.

As Kalen said, try Empire Earth.
