I got the chance not too long ago to talk to a "professional gamer" (he had made several thousands in tournaments in several countries). I got one question to ask, I chose: "Do you still enjoy games now that you're not just playing them as a hobby?"
"No," he said," I can rarely find fun in games anymore. Whenever I play all I see are tactical points and strategies developing in front of me. It's not about having a good time anymore. It's about undermining someone else's career."

sadly that may actually apply to me as well, I've been contemplating quitting gaming for a while now
:(

This is exactly why I think competitive/ professional gaming isn't a good thing (and because of the stupidity of most of the community that follows it). It turns gaming from a fun, non-obligatory hobby where you can experience new things into a dull, dreary, repetitive training session where you will end up with little time to play other games as you have to play pretty much every match you can.
Plus most competitive gamers are fucking assholes personality wise from what I've seen, thinking too highly of themselves or just completely ignoring the fact people can play for fun without giving a single shit.

lmao Tek9, It's like a 4Chan reject there seriously. My younger brother visits their site, and occasionally plays ~Pr0moDz~~~ with some of the absolute imbeciles that inhabit the place. They constantly call each other out for using Codehook, when almost everyone there has it or at least a subscription to it, and pretty much everyone enjoys spouting memeshit.
Professional gaming is the dumbest shit to ever come out of the gaming industry.
Don't be a tool OP, get a fucking real job and do something with your life, even being a bag boy is more honorable than what you want to do.
If this is the wrong place, just move it to where it belongs. Thank you.
So professional gaming and tournaments for awards have been interesting me for a quite while now, mostly because I end up at decent points (Top 4+ on scoreboard) in most games.
I simply wonder where to turn, if I want to join a team for any Source games? No idea what to do, just want to get something to do except trading useless items on Tf2..
Top 4?
I always get the highest score in EVERY fps game I lay my dick on (except TF2, that game gets under my skin).
Yeah dont go that route, you might end up raped in the local parking lot

if you can do it and you enjoy it then shut the fuck up, sad that this tends to be the general attitude towards professional gaming thanks to a just few dickheads ruining our reputation

you're not really that involved with it, most of the time you spend a few days in between matches doing whatever you want and then practice up a bit the day before your next match
those 3600 hours I have were time well spent I believe, scrims are some of the most fun you can have in a game and it may just be me realizing that there are more important things I could be spending my time on right now, not necessarily that playing games professionally has ruined my enjoyment of them

It might be, recently I've been playing less and less games. I'm thinking it's more me becoming jaded than anything else. For the few months I had off schooling I played a wide variety of games, and had a lot of fun, now it's kind of hard to stick to a game for too long. I could see the same thing happening if you were just to play one game for a long time too.

well, right now I'm definitely looking forward to Skyrim and BF3 and I plan on sinking a lot of time into them, maybe even going professional again with BF3
only time will tell I guess
there's a large difference between "competitive" and "professional"
and sometimes the 2 overlap.
However you need to make a decision. Do you just want to play competitively, or professionally?
Playing competitively is a good idea if you just want to make better friends in games, instead of the couple buddies you go pubstomp with, you can actually become friends with people in a team, and play other teams for fame and ladder glory. Play matches every so often, it's fun, and not that stressful.
But going professional is an entirely different deal. You have to make enough money to make a living. That... is damn hard.
Depending on the game, Gamebattles is a good place to start. If you're good, you can get recognized after a while. It's run by MLG.

MLG doesn't run Source game tourneys.
plus the PC division (excluding SC2) is a bit of a joke.
Blops? seriously?
both ESEA and CEVO run CS 1.6 and CS:S leagues.
Has OP even said what he want's to be a pro gamer at it could help a little.

professional doesn't mean literally taking it up as a profession, it just means you make money doing it

not for PC
this is the only good thing MLG ever did: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S59sXXggMb8
and then this happened: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZfIDs2e-PQ
and now mlg sucks again

ah semantics issue there, pro gamers in my eyes were always the ones making a living out of it.
The people who won money were just really-high-level competitive people imo, if they weren't career.
Agree with your point about MLG on PC though, it's a joke
The biggest joke to me is that the PC-divisions are considered jokes, but console controls are fucking shit in comparison to keyboard and mouse.
It's like being gifted at shit, and getting money for it.
