Best Racing Games (Help Facepunch, I need your advice!)
29 replies, posted
Ok, so for a Unit I'm doing at college (Critical approaches to Creative Media Products) I'm devising a list of the Top 10 Best Driving Games ever made, each with their own mini-review/summary (as you would typically see in a Top 10 list) in a magazine format.
Obviously, I have a few noteworthy games/series to add to this list but I have a feeling I'm missing a LOT. Once I feel I have plenty to choose from, I'll start arranging this list myself:
- Burnout
- Need for Speed
- Gran Turismo
- Mario Kart
- Ridge Racer
- FlatOut
- Colin McRae Series (inc. DiRT)
- TrackMania
- F1 Games
- Wipeout
- Outrun
- Blur
- Driver (series)
- Forza
- Daytona USA
- SEGA Rally
- Motorstorm
Would appreciate it if you guys have more reccomandations! (also note, I'll be choosing 1 game per series)
The things you list probably don't matter since it doesn't sound like a game design course you're doing, just write well and follow the criteria. Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing could be your #1 and nobody will care as long as you say why it deserves the top position.
Also use a spellchecker before you hand in your work.
For what it's worth, iRacing is something special and might deserve a mention. Haven't played it myself though.
Also OutRun. Fuckyeah, OutRun.

Where's Forza?
Daytona USA was a really popular racing game when it came out in the early 1990s. It did really well in arcades, you might be able to put that on your list.
Don't forget Daytona USA and Sega Rally Championship.
Daytona USA was the first race game with a visual damage system and 40 cars on a track at once, which was seriously impressive in 1995.
Sega Rally Championship 1 and especially 2 were also really popular in the time when arcades existed, and graphically impressive for their time (1995 and 1998).
Also, F-ZERO GX deserves a place on the list, as one of the hardest racing games made, developed by Nintendo and Sega AM2, who were the makers of Daytona USA.
Sega Rally and MotorStorm, don't forget those two.

Knew I'd missed a big franchise somewhere, I loved Forza 3, might add that. Thanks!
Also, Daytona USA is a brilliant reccomendation, I'll add that at some point too.

This is part of a Games Design course, this is simply a way to fulfill criteria for the final learning objective I have to do. I will of course add reasons (logical reasons that use correct subject terminology) as to why I placed said game at said rating.
Thanks for the advice though, I pretty much always proof read my work before submission (want to make sure it's the best possible grade I can get, what with the end of term coming and University on the horizon)

Sega rally was godly, but motorstorm wasn't that good, not the best racing game at all.

Also, add test drive unlimited. Brilliant game.

Yes, TDU was fantastic, shame TDU2 was extremely buggy at launch and the servers were terrible. MotorStorm irked me a little (the original), Pacific Rift was much better but definately not worthy to put it as a game in my Top 10.
So, this list is starting to shape up nicely, as long as I have the final 10 here, I'll sort them in order/rating later:
• Blur
• Burnout: Paradise
• Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010)
• DiRT 3
• Wipeout HD (Base) & Fury (Expansion)
• Mario Kart DS or Double Dash (can't decide)
• Test Drive: Unlimited
• Forza Motorsport 3
• Sonic & SEGA: All Stars Racing Transformed (PC Version)
• Daytona USA
I'm afraid I never played any SEGA Rally games so I can't really justify putting them on this list.
About NFS, I think that older games are better. The new ones are somewhat a let-down.
About WipEout, I think of Wip3out.

Since you made that, I doubt it really matters.

I really enjoyed HP 2010, the online Hot Pursuit mode was fantastic, something the older NFS (Pursuit & Most Wanted) sorely miss and the same can be applied to the new Most Wanted. Although, HP 2010 was missing customization, which was a complete letdown
As for Wipeout, I prefer HD over the older titles because the visuals really make the game stand out whilst maintaining that core Wipeout experience (and 60fps mmmmmmmmmm). Also Zone Mode is addictive as shit.
Again, just my personal preference
Crash Team Racing.

Just remembered, Speed busters american high ways is alot of fun.
For the Need for speed games, I would recommend focusing on two of their games specifically, both are quite old, but are simply amazing

Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit. Frankly, one of the most enjoyable and fun need for speeds out there, Sure it's old, but it's aged well, and really a pleasure to play. Before the era of Nitro, when winning a race meant getting the right gears, and pulling corners right. The hot Pursuit system was great too, allowing you to both pursue or be persued. It's totally worth a look.

This is perhaps Need For Speed's finest moment. With much less arcadish handling, and the information and work put into the game, this game grows a certain shine to it, with every car from the original Porsche 356s to boxters, 911s and GT cars. Along with deep details of Porsche, and it's history, it also boasts it's Evolution mode, which essentially is a massive string of tournaments, starting with the classic era, moving through the golden era upto the modern era. As you move along you buy newer and better cars, but the interesting twist, which you don't see in many games, is that these cars are persistant, if you damage your car, it stays damaged, unless you repair it, personally it's one of the only games that made me feel like the car I was driving was actually mine.
I could write pages on these games, but yeah, that's them for you.
