This pretty much shows why games these days are made overly simple.
Because players are idiots.
Jesus, even in Left 4 Dead, strong lighting had to be set up to form a path in places player needed to go because playtesters had no clue where to progress without a halo of light pointing it out.
Similarly the game was suppoosed to be more freeroaming but since players got lost too often the levels were made more linear.
