The kid will obviously be bitter about having his leg amputated and feel alienated from his peers. It's going to take time to come back from losing your leg at such a young age. The mother got the puppy with a similiar disability thinking the kid will connect with the puppy and learn to overcome the fact that he lost a leg and shouldn't lament it and brood over it feeling like he'll never be normal. The puppy doesn't give a fuck and is happy to be alive, the kid learns that too.
