I have an idea. Sharpness maps. Y'know how when you blow up a low-res texture, it gets all blurry? What if you had an extra bit of data for a texture like a normal map that instead determines how sharp that pixel is when scaled up. Such as full-black equals blurry and full-white equals always keep the pixel boundary sharp. That way stuff that doesn't need high sharpness like gradients can still be blurred to not look all pixellated but things like hard edges won't look like oatmeal when scaled up. Obviously that's just an example and we could have more values for things like per-border sharpness (a channel for how sharply each pixel blends with the ones to the right and below them), but I think that would be a great way keep lower-res textures looking good.
