If you like to show off that you're MLP fan, it is a sign that there's something wrong with you. Again, once you start to rub peoples' faces in that you like that show - you give them reason to bash you, hate you and fuck you up. Think about it. Sometimes it is just better to play it safe and use normal avatar, for example. It is up to you however.

I don't have my avatar so I can go "hey everyone look at me i watch mlp" I have it because well, I like it. I don't have a problem with people raging at my avatar infact I find it amusing sometimes. Again the only problem is when people jump to think every MLP fan faps to it.
If you ever see an avatar that you don't like, there's no shame in Ad Blocking it.
