On Kiska Island, after Allied troops had landed, this grave marker was discovered in a small graveyard amid the bombed-out ruins in August of 1943. The marker was made and placed by members of the occupying Japanese Army, after they had buried an American pilot who had crashed on the island. The marker reads: "Sleeping here, a brave air-hero who lost youth and happiness for his Mother land. July 25 - Nippon Army"
This is the actual photograph as exposed on the moon by Armstrong. He held the camera slightly rotated so that the camera frame did not include the top of Aldrin's portable life support system ("backpack"). A communications antenna mounted on top of the backpack is also cut off in this picture. When the image was released to the public, it was rotated clockwise to restore the astronaut to vertical for a more harmonious composition, and a black area was added above his head to recreate the missing black lunar "sky". The edited version is the one most commonly reproduced and known to the public,

Courtesy of a NASA artist (yes, “NASA artist” is a viable career choice) this image shows the Kepler-16 planetary system, also dubbed the “Tatooine” system by sci-fi junkies because it hosts the first known planet that actually has two suns. The brighter star is an orange dwarf, or a class K main sequence star. It’s substantially smaller and cooler than our own sun (or that of potentially earthlike Kepler-22b), but still much hotter and brighter than the smaller class M red dwarf seen passing in front of it in the picture.

Located 300 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices, the colliding galaxies have been nicknamed "The Mice" because of the long tails of stars and gas emanating from each galaxy. Otherwise known as NGC 4676, the pair will eventually merge into a single giant galaxy.
The image shows the most detail and the most stars that have ever been seen in these galaxies. In the galaxy at left, the bright blue patch is resolved into a vigorous cascade of clusters and associations of young, hot blue stars, whose formation has been triggered by the tidal forces of the gravitational interaction. Streams of material can also be seen flowing between the two galaxies.
The clumps of young stars in the long, straight tidal tail [upper right] are separated by fainter regions of material. These dim regions suggest that the clumps of stars have formed from the gravitational collapse of the gas and dust that once occupied those areas. Some of the clumps have luminous masses comparable to dwarf galaxies that orbit in the halo of our own Milky Way Galaxy.
I never actually understood why that explosion made those vertical strings of smoke
I never actually understood why that explosion made those vertical strings of smoke
It didn't. They fired off rockets seconds before the explosion, to use the smoke trails to observe the shockwave of the blast.
The spots of smoke on the right I think are (exploded) balloons carrying instruments to record other data.
