it's an amusement park ride to keep the morale up in the military, yknow
A cookie to anyone who can tell me what this odd German WWII era device is
Sound-based aircraft early warning system. Basically a big listening device, to try to hear incoming bombers before they were visible. I know the British had a system based on that, before radar was used, and the Germans never got radar during the war so I'm not surprised they had something similar. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acoustic_location Edit: Correction, it seems like Germany did have radar during WW2, but not used militarily in significant quantity.

In fact, I'm pretty sure they were the first to ever mount it to an aircraft for night-fighting [t]http://www.asisbiz.com/il2/Nachtjager/photos/images/Messerschmitt-Bf-110G-Zerstorer-NJG-Lichtenstein-radar-02.jpg[/t] BF110 was a big user of aircraft mounted radar. Turns out the American Public Education System simplifies things a lot.
HE219 got one too

they're actually tiny men chopping regular sized trees.
It's sorta sad to see enormous trees like that cut down.
I love human mentality "can we kill it" "let's kill it"
I wouldn't mind a table made from a slice of one of those huge trees
You must have a really big house.
You would need a desk that size to hold an old IBM.
I love human mentality "can we kill it" "let's kill it"
They were loggers, a tree that large is like a goldmine for them because all they have to do is focus on that one tree and get a suppy equal to like 30 trees, and if they had teams they could easily get a huge supply of wood in a relatively short amount of time. That is one of the darker sides of capitalism, you have to compete to win, and thus people went to extremes to try to win as if you lose you're dirt broke. Which no matter how many people say it isn't money is what makes the world go around in terms of "if you want to eat or bathe regularly".
I love human mentality "can we kill it" "let's kill it"
The trees were absolutely massive, and were not likely to grow any further. They would have fallen eventually, so it's good that their fall was controlled and the wood was put to good use. Also, the deaths of those trees made way for more of the same trees to grow.
I just spent an obscene amount of time reading about clouds and these were my favourite ones, lenticular.
