With the size of N1 and Saturn 5 you'd think they go into deep space.
Why is Russia so scared of using solid-fuel based rockets?
Why is Russia so scared of using solid-fuel based rockets?
Solid-fuel rockets, by virtue of having the fuel and oxidizer pre-mixed, have a tendency to explode, even if they're just sitting around. With liquid fuels, you can keep the two separated until ignition and minimize the danger. Russia's historically not had the best quality control, so they might have decided not to risk it.
Solid-fuel rockets have other drawbacks. They cannot be throttled down, giving less control, and they are less efficient (chemically, the best reaction possible is hydrogen plus oxygen, with an excess of hydrogen).
I also suspect that, since a major component in most solid-fuel rockets is ammonium nitrate, that the Soviets simply preferred to use their limited supply as a fertilizer for their often-failing agricultural industry, rather than in rockets.
The US uses them because they can be much cheaper to make, and once they've been made you don't need any training to fuel them up, you just push "launch". That second one mainly applies to military rockets like ICBMs, which tend to be launched by crews of non-rocket-scientists, but since we have the industry for making those we can make boosters pretty cheaply too.
Those tactics work against lightly-armed protesters, but against molotovs and guns is suicide. So far the Kiev protesters haven't fired guns, but I think it's just a matter of time.
More to the point, the protesters are organized in their supply chain. They have organized teams acquiring the things they need (food, gasoline, bottles, rocks, bricks, ice), they have teams "building" armaments (molotovs) and defensive fortifications, and they have organized teams fighting. Since many wars are won by logistics, not strategy, they're doing better than you might think.
Also important is the PR aspect. Black-suited riot police in strict formation using intimidation tactics tend to come off as stormtroopers - bad guys - while disorganized protesters have at least a chance of coming across as heroic rebels, although they have just as much chance of appearing as hoodlums and vandals. Considering the importance of appearances in a rebellion, they might be better off in the long run using less-effective but more sympathetic-looking tactics.
PS: That video was a staged training. While impressive, it doesn't show whether it would actually have worked since the "rioters" followed the script. In actual battle the enemy will *never* do exactly what you think they will.
Edit: Also, the police significantly outnumbered the "rioters" in that video. Their tactics are sound and effective for small riots, but would be ineffective in Kiev unless they can bring in a quarter million riot police.
Not at all, I think the more organized the better when it comes to protesting. The thing is, not having organization looks like everyone in the mob are just strangers who come together to act edgy and break windows blow off steam for a cause they barely even know about. Organized ranks of men, all with different coats and masks and gear but all carrying a shield and a missile, they are just more intimidating because we are so used to viewing them as hooligans. They aren't just gangsters, when they do the unthinkable, challenge that highly trained group of professional goons, they are suddenly heroic. If they are jailed, they are martyrs, if they win, heroes. They are young and run no risk of dying to the hands of men that don't even wield clubs, I don't expect any of them to flee when battle lines are drew. So, no matter what, they are a benefit the cause.
You can see it now, they stand only a several yards apart. The protesters are unified by the shield, by their chanting, by their stomping, by their bashing. The riot police never expected this, few are willing to be on the first front rank, this is evident as some shift around and they all shake or jitter around while in formation. They don't speak, they don't show their faces, they are alien and you wouldn't want to be them right now. They are the ones bracing themselves reluctantly, while the protesters were never more ready to fight. The commander of the protesters is in the front ranks, he is draped in the banner of the protesters, he wears no protection besides his shield, everything about him is ornate and he is obviously the leader of the group. He signals a shirtless man to break ranks and run out into the no man's land between the two walls, carrying only a petrol bomb in his hand. This man is a baseball player, he is the best thrower that the commander knows. The protesters behind him are going wild at this point, this man is already euphoric in his show of bravery, he hurls his bomb into the third rank of the riot police's defenses, the screams of an officer not expecting a missile to come towards him, he was unprepared. He stops, drops and rolls, and is then dragged out, and rushed out of the battlefield for treatment. That man who threw that first strike at the officers is instantly a hero, he returns to the ranks and is ready to serve the cause, he is not done with them yet. At once, all men in the ranks light their explosives and toss them, most of them hit the shields of the men prepared for such an occasion, but five are now grounded, their plastic armor smoldering, their allies too distracted with holding their shields up to help these men out. One of them dies, he is likely the first causality of many. They retreat, knowing that the protesters are far too formidable, they were untrained for such an occasion. Absolute glory for the protesters, and renown as well, for someone a block a way was videotaping the whole event, start to finish, and is preparing to upload it to YouTube, expecting tens of millions to view not only on the website, but in blogs and news and TV all around the world. Even if the protesters were to have been rushed by the riot police and mostly routed or arrested, the outcome is the same when it comes to sympathy for the rebels.

Protesters keeping the Kyiv fire wall going
Kinda off-topic and late, but I went on a vacation to New Zealand in 2012, and one of the places I visited was Tiritiri Matangi, an island/bird sanctuary where bird species endemic to NZ are being introduced to repopulate other parts. One of the birds they managed to successfully introduce was the Takahe, and one of the first individuals they brought over was Greg.
When we stepped off the ferry, Greg was there to greet the visitors in his own quietly enthusiastic manner (along with a big green turd). We split up into smaller groups to follow a guide around the island, and Greg started to follow my group. He'd make these whining/clucking noises every once in a while. He wasn't looking or begging for food, and he was never fed by humans, so I'm pretty sure he did that because he genuinely enjoyed human company (of course, people enjoyed his company too). He followed us pretty much all the way through the 3 hour tour but left shortly before we reached our destination.
R.I.P. Greg.
Whoa hold up, you went to Tiritiri?
I've said this in the thread before, but I live in the town the ferry leaves from.
But yeah, you should all go to Tiritiri. It's got boirds.

Well the Saturn V was built with the task to put nearly 35 metric tons in the form of the LM and CSM into a circumlunar trajectory, and remember that two Titan IVs (the rocket to the left of the N1's nose in that image) put both Voyager spacecraft into trajectories that would ultimately have them leave the solar system entirely, albeit with a load of gravity assists from the planets, so imagine what something the size of the N1 Saturn V could do given a light enough payload.
Also the later cargo variant of the SLS will be even taller and more capable than the Saturn V.

Those fucking floating anomalies, man.
I feel like posting some stuff about medieval + renaissance armour so here goes.
A small gif about various names for most armour pieces and it shows in which order you put it on.

If anyone's interested, the style of armour the guy's wearing is of the speculated mid-late 15th century English style which is also blued/blackened.
Here's another of him running in it. (poor quality sorry)

Lastly, a lecture from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is for people who are curious about the various myths and their origins of armour commonly believed to be as true today. It's quite long but it's great.

The level of detail he put into it is amazing. The engines really got me with the incredible amount of detail, right down to the compression blades.

I saw Rush live in Detroit during their Clockwork Angels tour. He had 3 full drum solos during the concert and it was the greatest god damn thing I've seen in my entire life. After seeing that theres not much more point in living cause I've already seen the climax of my life.
I feel bad for my kids cause it'll be like "yeah your birth was amazing and all but were you playing a 360 degree drum set on your way out of the womb?"

Easy solution to that would be to not rotate that part and instead rotate the patient.
