I swear if I ever win the lottery there is going to be a ton of old plane/tank wrecks suddenly disappearing from around the world
I'd rather buy a functioning Catalina. I love the history behind old wrecks like that, but I agree with Trunk Monkay on this one. A new one would be like a clean slate I could make meaningful myself, rather than have it come that way.
NHL Goalie before masks became mandatory equipment
I AM A LIAR Those aren't real scars, they're make up for a LIFE article about how dangerous goal tending is; excerpt from the article
This face belongs to Terry Sawchuk [wrote LIFE], a 36-year-old goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Re-created here, by a professional make-up artist and a doctor, are some of the more than 400 stitches he has earned during 16 years in the National Hockey League. Sawchuk has sustained other injuries not shown here: a slashed eyeball requiring three stitches, a 70% loss of function in his right arm because 60 bone chips were removed from his elbow, and a permanent “sway-back” caused by continual bent-over posture. Last year there were only six NHL goalies, but games had to be interrupted so regularly for spot surgical repairs that a new rule was passed requiring every team to carry a spare. The bloody ordeal has bred a special kind of man — half commando and half human pincushion — and it is not surprising he has special problems.
Actual photo of Sawchuck His Jersey number is still hanging in Joe-Louis Arena. [editline]6th February 2014[/editline] I'll make another hockey post tomorrow
That'd be a pretty shitty thing to do. It would be like excavating bodies of historical figures you're fond of. Machines might be soulless but they do have memories. Let the dead ones rest.
Won't these things rust into oblivion in the next hundred years anyway? Why not excavate to preserve them instead of "letting them be" as if they were once a human being who gave a damn where they lay (which they aren't, they're just machines).

Sanding off the rust and old chipped paint, fixing the dents and welding over the wounds is only going to wipe away the history behind the vehicle. You're better off just building a new one from scratch.

Cleaning it off would only happen to some parts of it that were seriously damaged by water and weather. Sanding, fixing dents and welding is restoring, not preserving. The purpose would be to maintain its present state, not put it back into running condition. I wouldn't put it in a museum as a "this was flown in the war" piece, more of a "this crashed during the war" piece.

and when he was in his mach 2.4 flight, he lost control of the aircraft and plummeted almost 30,000 feet only to regain control and land it without any further issues.
