I'd rather buy a functioning Catalina. I love the history behind old wrecks like that, but I agree with Trunk Monkay on this one. A new one would be like a clean slate I could make meaningful myself, rather than have it come that way.

I'm for historical preservation as much as the next guy, but I'd much rather see the wrecks restored rather than left to be eaten by rust or undersea worms or whatever.

Trying to even transport them to a warehouse or museum where you can preserve them is only going to damage them further, especially if it's an aircraft or underwater wreck. Sanding off the rust and old chipped paint, fixing the dents and welding over the wounds is only going to wipe away the history behind the vehicle. You're better off just building a new one from scratch.

I said preserve it, not restore it. There's a difference. Cleaning it off would only happen to some parts of it that were seriously damaged by water and weather. Sanding, fixing dents and welding is restoring, not preserving. The purpose would be to maintain its present state, not put it back into running condition.
I wouldn't put it in a museum as a "this was flown in the war" piece, more of a "this crashed during the war" piece.

You're neglecting the fact that the day before, he fell off his horse and broke two of his ribs. He was so scared of being replaced he went to a fucking vet to take care of him
and when he was in his mach 2.4 flight, he lost control of the aircraft and plummeted almost 30,000 feet only to regain control and land it without any further issues.
