Also he broke two ribs two days before the flight but didn't tell anyone because he didn't want to be removed from the program.

*RATO, not JATO.
*RATO, not JATO.
JATO and RATO are the same thing. While RATO is obviously more accurate, JATO is the proper terminology.
[editline]6th February 2014[/editline]
at least this is my understanding, i may be incorrect
for example, when a c-130 needs assisted takeoff, it uses JATO bottles, though these are technically rockets

depends how much you care about technicalities
Can we rename this to "Pictures of war stuff" thread?
It'd be more appropriate.

no, being a planet it wanders around the sky as the year passes and when it's on the opposite side of the sun it isn't visible at all
Earth is the "evening star" on Mars, the first ~star to appear in the sky as the sun sets like Venus is here

though due to the different axial tilt it has different pole stars to us that would be used to find north and south, Deneb or Sadr to find north and Kappa Velorum to find south, whereas we have Polaris for north and Sigma Octantis (faint as shit so probably never used) for south

B47's are neat lookin planes. There's a static one that greets you right after you get through the gates at my base
Also, fun fact: Fat Albert had to stop doing the JATO take off for air shows because we straight up ran out of those bottles. I was lucky enough to view it at a show when I was younger, and it is indeed incredible. Would hate to be in the back at the time though.
And just so this post isnt just my inane rambling, have a pic from my day job.

Not exactly a "woah this is neat" thing, but I figure that Auxiliary Thread could be kind of a "something you didn't know" thread as well. Anyways:

I always like it and find it weird when shows will just have these sudden explosions of fluid animation where the animation is usually just ok or average.
The best example I have on-hand is this gif from SDF Macross. It's a show that has animation that ranges from good to acceptable to horrible depending on the episode. It's all over the place. But this, it's just one shot and we never see anything like it again. Hell, the fight doesn't continue with this sort of animation, just this one bit is like this. But just look at it.

“Map of the world, shown as if the oceans were dried up. Thomas Burnet was the first Englishman to attempt a scientific account of the origin of the earth. His treatise, Telluris Thoeoria Sacra, is a curious blend of geography and archaeology, which aroused considerable interest at the time. California is shown as an Island, but no Northwest passage, an unusual concession for an Englishman of this era.”
Boy those are some deep oceans.
