I think it might just be pixel art.
So the US military back in ww2 did something pretty damn cool. They turned a fucking rock out at sea into a concrete fortress with battleship cannons.
ort Drum (El Fraile Island), also known as the “concrete battleship,” is a heavily fortified island fortress situated at the mouth of Manila Bay in the Philippines, due south of Corregidor Island. Built by the United States, it was occupied by the Japanese in World War II, and was recaptured by the U.S. after igniting oil and gasoline in the fort, leaving it permanently out of commission. Fort Drum was named for Brigadier General Richard C. Drum.

Known as Fort Drum, but commonly referred to as the “concrete battleship,” this heavily fortified structure roughly resembles a concrete ship. Fort Drum stands on an originally barren rocky island called El Fraile that was leveled by the U.S Army between 1909 and 1914, and built up with thick layers of steel reinforced concrete into a massive fortress, 350 feet long, 144 feet wide, and rising 40 feet above the water.
January 28, 2014, Lerwick, Scotland - The annual festival of fire, known as 'Up Helly Aa', has taken place in the Shetland Islands, Scotland, on the last Tuesday of January since 1876. It celebrates the end of the yule season and harks back to the influence of the Scandinavian Vikings in the islands. The climax of the day comes when participants, in full costume, haul a Viking longboat through the streets of Lerwick, the capital and main port of the Shetlands. Up to 1,000 people march in a parade and throw flaming torches into the galley. (Photo by Jeff J Mitchell/***** Images)
And if I remember correctly they didn't have steel, but iron and it wasn't much of it, they wore wood, leather and fur a lot though. It was good for protection and warmth.
In a blizzard a full set of steel scalemail (surprised to see no one in chainmail) isn't going to be all that fantastic.
I mean, it's pretty cool that they have that as a tradition and all but it seems they do it more for the fun of it than actually caring about their history.
Which there's nothing wrong with, all holidays are that way now. But it kind of sucks away anything I can appreciate from it.
Also men should probably not wear valkyrie helmets, it's like seeing a dude dressing as an amazon.

They had steel in the Viking age.
[editline]16th February 2014[/editline]
Mail was probably pretty common, more so than leather or fur.
well, I should correct that: we've found a lot of mail and no leather, but obviously one will obviously hold up better than the other over time

The SS had plenty of conscripted and non conscripted foreign and ethnic soldiers in their ranks. Other divisions would also use them to bolster their ranks, and when the Soviets were raping their way through the eastern front, the Wehrmacht was about ready to give anyone a rifle who was old enough to shoulder it.
Are you unaware of the concept of a jumpsuit? It's not molded.
Now for some cool viking pics:
Up Helly A', eh? It's an interesting one. Lerwick is the main one but there's also regional ones as well, off the top of my head there's also the North Mainland, Scalloway, Nesting/Girlsta and South Mainland Up Helly A's. It's a massive nod to the Scandinavian heritage of the islands. There's the Jarl Squad, which are pictured in this which have a different shield, helmet and armour design every year, and the galley they burn is also built from scratch using traditional methods (as far as I know). Along with the Jarl Squad, there's usually about 50 others (less for the regional ones), each with a different act and they go around the halls in Lerwick and perform all night, alongside getting completely and utterly fucking annihilated drunk. I've not been in a squad before, but I've been at a hall and it's definitely interesting seeing all of the different acts come through. The Jarl Squad in 2013 was fucking awesome though. You really have to be committed to it to get through the whole night. I left about 3AM in 2013, and I think it kept going til at least 6AM. For the Jarl Squad it's pretty much 24 hours solid of constant marching and shouting.
