The Little Mermaid, actually
i think we already have enough sci-fi here. this is the williams x-jet. a personal flying platform comissioned in the 70s. it was meant for military purposes but never caught on because the military didn't find an use for it. it had a total flight time of 45 minutes before it went out of fuel. why didn't they ever release this to civilians? The alpha was so unreal. Would have loved to play it.

It all boils down to Half Life 2 coming out with a much less dark atmosphere than any given piece of art for it.
This actually looks better than the in-game cities they came up with. Not saying the in-game cities are bad, but still.
I gotta agree, this is more what HL2's atmosphere should have been, and things should have gradually gotten brighter and happier as the story progressed through the episodes with the defeat of the combine.
You still gotta give some credit to HL2 though, it nailed the depressing and oppressed city/nation/world atmosphere without making everything all dark and sad and gloomy and all that shit. That takes talent.

That takes talent.
I think this quote from the enhancement mod thread sums up HL2's atmosphere nicely. "The sun was shining during the Plague, the sun was shining during the Blitzkrieg, and the sun shines now." The Combine occupation was the end of the world as we know it, but not the end of the world. Well, not yet anyway.
Except for the "rawr I'm a cop with a stunstick that I hit people with" It didn't feel like more than a regular FPS imo
While I agree the CP aren't really the best villains in the history of storytelling, I still thought the world they created was pretty damn well-made. You have this world that looks like something from the 16th century, especially at the beginning. It's all nice and bright and daytime, and everyone's calm. In reality, however, there's everyone's absolutely miserable and the people who are supposed to be protecting them are cold-stone psychopaths. In other words, it's like a colorful blanket covering a bed that's dirty and has piss all over it.

I live in one of those: You can almost hear a gunship somewhere in the distance, can't you? And the second half of your post is exactly why I prefer the release version mood. Sure, pre-release is cool and dark, no denying that. But what we have now is so much more relate-able, no over-dramatization. Combine enslaved Earth, put some necessary city walls here, checkpoints there and locks over there, only the things that make sense and doesn't waste resources. This level of realism makes it even more scary than just being dark and foggy. They use our buildings for storage and living, our trains and railways for transportation. And where they use their own technology, it's built using our existing technology as inspiration (Choppers, razortrains, apc's) with our planet and infrastructure in mind. This little paragraph sums up the half life 2 design philosophy, and I love it:
16th century
Yeah what Spor said. It's 19th century architecture.
