Beautiful story.
Is this one of those images, that after you "see" it, it becomes really obvious?
Not really, I just came across this painting which is from 1888 and noticed the structure on the left looks weirdly like a school bus

You can almost hear a gunship somewhere in the distance, can't you? And the second half of your post is exactly why I prefer the release version mood. Sure, pre-release is cool and dark, no denying that. But what we have now is so much more relate-able, no over-dramatization. Combine enslaved Earth, put some necessary city walls here, checkpoints there and locks over there, only the things that make sense and doesn't waste resources. This level of realism makes it even more scary than just being dark and foggy. They use our buildings for storage and living, our trains and railways for transportation. And where they use their own technology, it's built using our existing technology as inspiration (Choppers, razortrains, apc's) with our planet and infrastructure in mind.
This little paragraph sums up the half life 2 design philosophy, and I love it:

Half of it was the fact that a lot of stuff they made couldn't run on 2003-04 computers. They just were pretty shit and the tech was literally doubling every year till about 09.
Another part of it was the leak got them to cut a lot of stuff and to me, Viktor Antonov left not because of the non ambitious projects. But because he was simply pissed off that they cut everything except for a few pieces of combine architecture and the overall uniforms here and there for the combines.
They cut so much shit from his project that they released a fucking book on it.
Yeah what Spor said. It's 19th century architecture.
I should've been more clearer, 16th century France. I just get that vibe whenever I play HL2's city levels.

the wasteland was replaced by route 17 & sand traps.
[editline]24th February 2014[/editline]
which was the path you took to the depot. which you end up taking anyway because you go to nova prospekt. the depot still exists in the hl2 universe. you can actually see it when you're approaching nova prospekt.
[editline]24th February 2014[/editline]
the retail hl2 universe is a lot more realistic in its approach. it might not be as ambitious as the beta but the storyline is so well structured i honestly don't mind the fact that they re-made the storyline.
The citadel in HL2 stays in the same spot relative to the player for the majority of the game if I remember correctly. It only moves out of place by a few metres.

Actually the leak was not a thing that made them cut a bunch of shit. That is a huge misconception.
In fact a shit load of the current retail assets are in there. A bunch of the cooler concepts and major areas like the Air Exchange or Borealis for example were last worked on in 2002.
All the leak made Valve do is step up their game and work harder.
I'm serious, check this out:

This demo was made before the leak, the general areas, look, and all that other stuff are in there. Watch from 6:26 onward to see what I'm talking about.
Sure some things are different and a few of the areas aren't actually in the game, but that's because the levels here were made specifically for the demo. Some bits of the level geometry was reused in a few parts in the final game, but still.
Also where did you read that stuff about Viktor Antonov?
From what I've heard he's very happy with how Half-Life2 turned out. I've read a couple interviews and he didn't seem pissed in the slightest bit at Valve or the game.

Since we're on the topic, have some concept art from HL2

Wasn't the leak also a version with a lot of shit they had already cut anyway?
Like, it was a wip version they had already scrapped.

No, it was the current version, we just never got the whole thing.
The guy who got it from valve it confirmed he had around 60-70 GB of content but someone else only released around 4-6 GB, just enough to make it playable.
Funfact: The guy who stole it from Valve was not the dude who leaked it. To this day nobody knows who uploaded it.

Pima Air and Space Museum. I went to Arizona just to go here and the Titan missile silo. We also stopped in Vegas at the National Atomic Testing Museum. I spent two days there, and my only regret is not going on the bus tour through the airfield next door with the surplus planes.

I've already posted the best of the Titan missile pictures up, I might get around to putting up some of the Air and Space ones one of these days

The mask is the face he holds for the public, but as a lot of soldiers would say, war rips up something inside of you, which is shown on his actual face. Beautiful piece of work IMO.
Don't know how to say that without sounding a bit dramatic, but I guess it's deserving of it.

how about "he's 2 faced, which he uses to cover up his PTSD and other mental disorders caused by warfare".
how about "he's 2 faced, which he uses to cover up his PTSD and other mental disorders caused by warfare".
Yeah that's almost what I wanted to say except two faced has a bad connotation though.

Feels.
This was so... I don't quite know the word, but I thought I'd take some time to discuss it.
I'm pretty much an emotionless person, only something very tragic like the death of a loved one would possibly make me cry or feel sad.
But that was really powerful.
i feel like half-life 2 shoulda been way more grittier, like the beta
like, Gordon escapes Black Mesa only to be met with this awful, blackened world where no one gives a shit about him
as if Gordon just has this constant black cloud over his head, denying him emotion or celebration
dont get me wrong half-life 2 does this just fine but the beta just has way more of a "wow it really sucks to be him" feel
hopefully this was legible its 1:03 and im tired
