Walking everywhere isn't that bad. You get use to it after a day or two. The reason why it's hard to walk everywhere for some people is because they aren't use to it.

You get used to it. Also, it's better in Manhattan than the other boroughs because it's a nearly perfect grid, and everything is in much closer proximity. There's a bus stop and train station on pretty much every second city block.

doesnt manhattan have like, a perfect grid layout though? id imagine getting lost would be pretty hard (edit: according to tau!, yes it does)
also, walking everywhere is great. not needing a car and not spending anything on gas money is pretty awesome. not to mention, it's not like you don't have a choice: you can walk, get a car or use public transportation, while in smaller cities you usually NEED a car
