Here's some wallpapers I made from raw hubble images - these started out as ~16000x16000 TIF images that were noise filtered, shrunk and cropped and otherwise edited to 1080p. [t]http://i.minus.com/ibkT2jcZRp4h2C.jpg[/t] Personal favourite and my current wallpaper: [t]http://i.minus.com/iwrsVdG80SACN.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.minus.com/i3Pje6OEcHKQh.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.minus.com/iCdSmpnKV8G43.jpg[/t] Also, here's a couple of avatars from stuff posted some pages back: Here's a bonus, the artist responsible for these wallpapers: [t]http://i2.minus.com/iQQOC2N5u5Jrp.jpg[/t]
Could you make some more? I really like these.
Personal favourite and my current wallpaper: [t]http://i.minus.com/iwrsVdG80SACN.jpg[/t]
I have the same one, only scaled to 2560x1440 instead of 1920x1080. It's the only way to get good 1440p wallpapers - go to NASA, download something at ridiculous raw resolutions, then crop+downscale it yourself.
Could you make some more? I really like these.
Oh yes, I'd love to! Give me a couple of minutes. Because damn, space is so beautiful.
Also, here's a couple of avatars from stuff posted some pages back:
Took this one, thanks for making it!
yeah space is cool i guess [t]http://puu.sh/7FeFI.jpg[/t]
I wish the Huygens Titan lander would have lasted longer :(
Took this one, thanks for making it!
Late man, this guy's had it for months http://facepunch.com/member.php?u=29612
Late man, this guy's had it for months http://facepunch.com/member.php?u=29612
Well... Now I have it too.
Well... Now I have it too.
Wow, that's an interesting coincidence.
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b8/Map_of_the_Atlantrop_Projekt_en.png[/t]
I think that's a terrible idea.
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b8/Map_of_the_Atlantrop_Projekt_en.png[/t]
This just looks like a massive waste of energy, resources and nature.
As if we needed to fuck with Earth even more
That gigantic canal to connect Venice to the Mediterranean sounds incredibly dumb. Enjoy digging a new Suez canal that's three times as long as the current one too. And building a railway from Tunis to Cape Town? Lmao what? [editline]22nd March 2014[/editline] Also if one of those dams breaks that would be like the worst catastrophe in human history.
Old... silliness?
The Ultima Tower is a hypothetical supertall skyscraper, designed by American architect Eugene Tsui in 1991. With a total height of 3,218.7 metres (10,560 ft), the tower would be 2 miles tall, and comprise 500 stories if built. The proposed tower would have a diameter at the base of 1,828.8 metres (6,000 ft), and comprise 1,500,000,000 square feet (140,000,000 m2) of interior floor space. Tsui proposed that the tower would be home to 1 million people, and would cost an estimated US$150 billion. The tower would use the atmospheric pressure difference between the bottom and the top of the tower to create electricity throughout the tower. The building is intended to handle problems with overpopulation and to create a "mini-ecosystem" for its inhabitants
It might be worth it centuries or millennia from now, when livable space is actually scarce, but right now it isn't. At least globally speaking. We can revisit the idea once we've built up all the existing corners of the globe to current peak levels. Edit: That was directed at the "drain the mediterranean" idea, but it applies equally to the "clearly compensating for something" tower.
Old... silliness?
From a standpoint of someone who has no experience with architecture (me) I think that would collapse before it even reaches the 3000 line.
From a standpoint of someone who has no experience with architecture (me) I think that would collapse before it even reaches the 3000 line.
i swear it would too, but then again the amount of supports it would have
It would have at least 3 supports.
From a standpoint of someone who has no experience with architecture (me) I think that would collapse before it even reaches the 3000 line.
Look at the massive foundation, though - it looks like about 7000 feet across. It's more a problem of economics - to build that high with current materials, you'll need a lot more support structure per unit volume than you would normally, so your efficiency is shot to hell. It might be cheaper to just build a few hundred 2000-foot towers. Then there's the other problems. What happens when there's a fire? How do you keep it cooled? How do you handle sewage? Water? Power? Food?
I assume a massive merciless sprinkler system would be needed to prevent fires. Also, food and stuff could arrive through special elevators from the bottom floor. Heck, you could probably have roads inside and drive delivery trucks around :v: [editline]23rd March 2014[/editline] Maintenance costs would be absurd.
Old... silliness?
And then God clicks it...

The dam project at Gibraltar is quite old if I remember correctly.
Old... silliness?
Imagine how much it would suck having a room at the very top, it would take ages to get there. Then the elevator breaks and you're forced to use the stairs.
Old... silliness?
that thing would be a huge hazard for aircraft.
More ridiculously stupid construction projects pls
