It was partially because they wanted to kill off the natives, but they couldn't do it directly for some reason i don't remember, so they killed off bison because that was their main food source, forcing them to either move away or die of starvation.
Other reasons also included the leather and clearing up space so that farmers wouldn't have their animals "competing" with other bovines.
Herds would also often get in the way of train tracks so train companies were out to get them too.
Ultimately they started harvesting the bones to use them as fertilizer.

It was incredibly easy to hunt.
Plains Indians that got horses and guns later on kept on hunting them. Combine that with recreational hunting that was never controlled and you get a bison population that is rapidly declining.

a group of people dying in a horrendous way because of a terrible accident is a tad more serious than a single person dying.
If you think that jet crash and all those people dying and the rest being maimed and wounded is funny, you should probably get your head checked and start on some medication because you may be a serial killer.
The day my dad died we actually made jokes about it. Eased the pain really.
Mine included saying that he decided to go that day as he saw the footy scores at half time and his team was loosing (which was true).
His brother made the best one though. Walked in, looking sad, as you do. Suddenly he just gets a very evil grin on his face and says "I've waited 52 years to say this, I'm finally the number 1 son!"
