Simply put they're much thicker and lower than the walls of the average medieval castle. Even a decent amount of cannonballs can't do much against 10 meters of stone, but everything has it's breaking point of course.
The bastions are there so that the defenders have all points covered at all times.
More angles means it reflects more radar and the cannonballs have a harder time staying on-course
It can't hit it head on or something.
that, and the walls were very thick
however the main idea of the fortress is to turn the entire surrounding area into a massive meat grinder; the shape of the structure leaves absolutely no cover for the enemy, a significant improvement over the round medieval fortifications
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/27/StarFortDeadZones.png[/t]
i'll quote Wikipedia on this
Passive ring-shaped (enceinte) fortifications of the Medieval era proved vulnerable to damage or destruction by cannon fire, when it could be directed from outside against a perpendicular masonry wall. In addition, an attacking force that could get close to the wall was able to conduct undermining operations in relative safety, as the defenders could not shoot at them from nearby walls. In contrast, the star fortress was a very flat structure composed of many triangular bastions, specifically designed to cover each other, and a ditch. In order to counteract the cannonballs, defensive walls were made lower and thicker. To counteract the fact that lower walls were easier to climb, the ditch was widened so that attacking infantry was still exposed to fire from a higher elevation for a while, including enfilading fire from the bastions

Anyone care to explain how making it shaped like that protects against cannonballs?
Sort of the same premise with angled tank armor.

When the cannonball hits the wall dead on, it's only, lets say, 3 meters thick. But when it hits it an an angle like that, it's 4 or 5 meters thick and it has a higher chance to be deflected because of the angle.

Washington actually has quite a few old fortified installations.
We have three different forts, part of a system that was designed to guard a portion of the mouth of the puget sound in case of attack. Its a little like one giant bay. There is Fort Worden, Fort Flagler, and Fort Casey.

Its pretty cool because on all of the bases they are open to the public, so you can climb on them, explore the tunnels, and do pretty whatever short of vandalism.

The whole place is pretty big, and in each of these pictures it is just one of the several artillery bunkers that are spread around. In addition to the gun emplacements there are mortar emplacements on some of the forts.

The forts contained a variety of guns, ranging from 10 inch and 12 inch disappearing guns, to 10 inch barbette guns, 5 inch guns, 3 inch guns, and 12 inch mortars. The disappearing guns are usually mounted in batteries of 2.
I found this picture of where some of the disappearing guns where probably made/assembled. I know that the same model of disappearing gun was manufactured by Bethlehem Steel at one point.

Are you talking about the B-17 or the P-51? Because theres only a handful of B-17's that weren't turned into mobile homes, and theres only a handful of those that are still actively flying and they're not the kind of aircraft you take out on a random Sunday.
