I'm guessing they were already dead and stuffed for those photos. Considering the shutter speed of 100+ year old cameras, it's hard to imagine they would get anything living to sit still in an unnatural position long enough for such a clear photo.

It looks like their bodies might be fake, and only their real heads are visible, stuck through holes in the back of the set, which might explain them looking weird
