Don't think this needs a description.
funfact, the blackbirds fuel tanks barely held fuel until it got into the air and shock heated enough to expand the metal and seal the tanks.

they also wanted to fuel the thing on liquid coal and hydrogen.

everything about this plane is fucking metal. The early engine-starting cart was powered by 2 bigblock 6.6l or 7.0l engines, unmuffled.
I'd have the biggest boner working with these planes.
Yep, it also had one of the few engine engine designs where which enabled it to work like a scramjet at mach 3+.
The inlet cone actually moves backwards during high speeds to allow this.

Yeah, everything about it was absolutely nuts.
There was so much for the pilots to concentrate on during flight that the artificial horizon was changed to be a laser line projected onto the cockpit so it was easier to always keep your eye on it.

Some weird prototypes, that's a drone carried by an M-21.
Also, speaking of fuel leaking, you can see the fuel leaking in this picture of the Blackbird.

The SR-71 is just so fucking stupidly awesome. I remember my dad telling me when I was a kid that they didn't carry machine guns because they would shoot themselves down by running into the bullets :v:

Now this never made any sense to me. Would the velocity of the bullets be relative to the plane? Sure, they would decelerate faster, but it's not like they're being fired from rest.
I think it's just meant to be an implication that it travels faster than a bullet.
If it did fire bullets though, the drag on the bullets might slow them down so rapidly that they would hit the plane even if the plane was only firing up at a very slight angle.
Running into your own bullets is a thing fighter pilots have to worry about sometimes, but the angle you'd have to be shooting at would be quite extreme normally.

Shooting yourself down at mach 1: http://www.aerofiles.com/tiger-tail.html
The pilot caught back up with the bullets on their descent because he was descending at mach 1 and the bullets would have slowed to terminal velocity.
Yep, it also had one of the few engine engine designs where air could enter the engine at supersonic speeds (most supersonic aircraft slow the airflow into the engine) which enabled it to work like a scramjet at mach 3+.
Are you sure that's right? I'm pretty sure it still has to slow it down to subsonic speeds before combustion, making it a ramjet when in that operating mode (and a turbojet at lower speeds).

I might be confusing it with another engine.

That's probably not true, but you did remind me of the YF-12, AKA armed Blackbird.

weren't Blackbird pilots instructed to evade missiles by flooring it?
weren't Blackbird pilots instructed to evade missiles by flooring it?
In the book "Sled Driver", Brian Schul talks about seeing missile lock and launch warnings all the time throughout missions and just not caring because they'd never catch up at their speed and altitude. If a missile got a bit closer they'd just up the throttle a bit more. The absolute top speed of the blackbird was unknown, it was as fast as the pilots dared to push it.

It's the tool of a killer, perhaps. But compared to the modern day equivalent, niggah, that's classy as fuck.
