I agree that I like Stormtroopers better, I just think Stormtroopers make such great antagonists, plus it would be hard to get the general audience to view the Rebels as the "bad guys" from the perspective of the show.

I dunno, they could play up the "what's the point of war?" aspect and have sympathetic stormtroopers. Or they could focus on something other than the main Rebellion - there are plenty of other things for them to fight.

I like how a lot of Star Wars has a subtle WW2 motif to it. I'd love to see modern grittiness to battle scenes because it would be conducive to that.

They could portray them as radical terrorists rather than freedom fighters. Also portray the empire government as stabilizing after the tumultuous clone wars.

I'm almost getting a Star Wars/HL2 hybrid vibe from this. Personally I think it would be cool to see the protagonists of our show being part of an underground resistance movement against the Empire. It puts the rebels in a new, gritty light, and would hopefully cause the audience to empathize with them in their fight to out the Empire gov't. Almost like the fucked up flipper baby of Star Wars/Half Life 2/Band of Brothers/Red Dawn. Now I'm just imagining too many possibilities and getting my hopes up for nothing. Fuck being a doctor I'm gonna drop out and be a director now.

Star Wars has the potential for a gritty TV/Movie/mini series, it's just that it's aimed to be more kid friendly so it can appeal to a wider market.
The Star Wars canon is extremely vast and has a lot of good stories in it (lot of bad ones too); the universe is very intricate and has well fleshed out environments and cultures. They could make a fantastic series out of a gritty story; they could include everything from racism to Gestapo style mass murder and even complete destruction of planets and cultures.

The way Palpatine rose to be supreme leader of the Republic was done the [i]exact[/i] same way Adolf Hitler did it in Germany. Find a scapegoat and rise to power on promises to mass execute that scapegoat. Imperial officer uniforms are heavily inspired from the SS and even Vader's helmet (mask not included) is close to a direct copy of Wehrmacht infantry helmet. Several star wars weapons are modified WWII era weapons.

Not exact. Palpatine was elected, Hitler was appointed. And Hitler gave no public statement of executing anyone, only to "deal" with the "problems" of some minorities.
I'm sure if half of the Nazi Party of 1933 knew what 1945 would look like, they would have never supported Adolf, military defeat aside, looking only at the Holocaust.

I never liked the Rebels because it felt like I was forced to like them. I didn't like the jedi either for the same reason, it just feels like you have to like them because they were designated as good and everything else is evil by comparison. But you never really get to know any of the Stormtroopers and what they are like, and that makes me like them alot more.

Well it's just a shot from the episode Crossroads that was made to look similar to the photo, it's not actually a photo that was taken during the filming.
