Was gonna say that that is a reenactment. However, seconds after this photo was taken the soldier was killed. Forgot his name though.

In "Tiger's in the Mud", the author talks about a stubborn commissar who was walking around a fierce battle rallying his troops and forcing them to move forward. For whatever reason, the German's just couldn't land a bullet in the guy, so the author (a commander of a Tiger tank) ordered his gunner to take him out. The Commissar got hit with a 8.8cm HE shell and afterwards the Russians retreated.
I think I'd be pretty quick to retreat, too, if my CO suddenly exploded in a mess of crimson pulp.
They probably would have earlier if they weren't at risk of being shot in the back by their Commissars. The Russians killed something like 167,000 retreating friendlies between 42-43 (IIRC).

Y'know, thinking about that massive number of friendly casualties made me think. What if, in the future, when video games just keep getting more and more advanced (think Matrix-esque "jacking in" sort of virtual reality,) we'd be able to basically reenact almost any battle throughout the ages. If you played with the Russians, on a server that just coincidentally had a Quake/Doom announcer mod installed, all you'd probably hear is "Team killer!" every few seconds being shouted over the never ending gunfire and screams of agony. Commissars would lost a point for killing a friendly soldier, but gain 10 if it properly rallied their troops and led to a successful push.

Less blabbing from me, and more pics. Here's some Godzilla (2014) concept art by Matt Allsopp.

The Russians killed something like 167,000 retreating friendlies between 42-43 (IIRC).
Which commissars? Politruks or civil commissars? Front-line or rear? There were debates in the Red Army about the role of officers and commissars. The word “officer” was regarded as shameful in the Red Army since the Civil War and up until 1943 when Stalin introduced shoulder straps. Only then did the Politruks gain actual power and influence over men on the battlefield. I guess you're referring to the aftermath of Order 227, however if you read the order itself in full, it becomes clear that commissars were given the authority to halt retreats by any means they deemed necessary, rather than "shoot anyone who retreats". "167,000" is an absurd inflation since you absolutely cannot accurately document something like that, there were instances when highly-devout and ideological commissars would shoot their own men to raise morale (which in turn sometimes earned them a bullet from other fellow soldiers who were fed up with their bullshit in the midst of battle), but such cases were sporadic and fairly uncommon. I think you might be confusing "commissar murder friendly" numbers with "execution by trial for treason, aiding the enemy, spies, cooperation with the enemy, murder of civilians, etc." Although technically, retreating without permission in all armies counts as treason as well, so go figure. There's an interesting perspective on the Red Army, particularly Commissars, through the eyes of a WW2 German general. This is the book in question. [editline]5th June 2014[/editline] I guess I should also post something related.
Soviet Jewish World War II veteran Boris Ginsburg poses for a portrait at his house in Ashdod, Israel. Ginsburg, born in Belorussia, was kept by a German garrison in the Lenin ghetto from 1941-2. He then joined the partisans for two years and in 1944 he joined the Red Army as a combat soldier. Ginsburg demobilized in 1947 and immigrated to Israel in 2001. About 500,000 Soviet Jews served in the Red Army during World War II, and the majority of those still alive today, live in Israel.
Those Godzilla pictures look more like paintovers of movie stills, concept art tends to not be this close to the final product
http://imgur.com/a/Wbd6x?gallery
Really fascinating! It's cool to think what a huge process it takes a womans body to correctly develop a human. It also shows how much can go wrong. Kind of makes me feel lucky that I was correctly developed!
What game are you working on?
i'm not allowed to talk about it atm but we will release some info few months from now and i will definitely make a thread on fp (if somebody doesn't make one before me). all i'm allowed to say is that it's an "small scale tactical RTS set in a huge game world" and that it's set in 1984. (not the book, the actual year 1984)
