An abandoned mall turned aquarium is a nicer sight than a malaria-ridden mosquito den, I suppose. Hell, I'd take the fish over mosquitoes any day.

Vietnam-era equipment, even my rifle was from the 60's (it was more reliable and accurate than most of the 90's versions lol). God I hated that fucking battle vest, useless piece of shit it was.

Imagine, a settlement like that using artifacts or the harnessed energy from anomalies to power a "colony" of sorts in the zone.

This is why conscription here is complicated, you basically can choose not to, but even if you do and they for some reason pick you you lose that choice.
Why does military conscription have to be compulsory in finland?
i think the short answer is "because Russia"
People should be allowed to refuse, no?
we are allowed to refuse actually. refusing just means you go to prison. personally i think the whole system is bullcrap. and it's always being justified by "it's the only way we can uphold a proper military force capable of defeding our nation". what a joke, everyone knows we would never stand a chance against any modern invader other than Sweden, army or not
i think the short answer is "because Russia" we are allowed to refuse actually. refusing just means you go to prison.
To clarify this a bit, you don't get a criminal record for doing so. Also it's not a prison sentence anymore, actually just house arrest. They attach a GPS collar on your ankle which monitors your movement and sets an alarm in case you don't stick to the timetable set by authorities.
oh yeah i actually remember hearing something like that i was declared unfit for service anyway, whoop de doo
oh yeah i actually remember hearing something like that i was declared unfit for service anyway, whoop de doo
How did you two manage to forget civil service which is the third option, anyway i got doctors papers and out of that silly business. Kinda sucks that all my friends are starting it now so time to sit rest of the summer alone... like the last one and the one before that, well shit.

I heard it was only 2 years. If they had a professional army which people served in for 6 years it would probably be cheaper.

They could have something like the US Selective Service program so they can get a troop surge during an emergency.

You lucky fuckers. Its 2 years + 10 years of reservice here. Missed your fitness training when you get called back because you changed number? Enjoy your fine. Or enjoy going into military prison!

Only summer camp we had was in the middle of nowhere during constant battle training. :c
I did the worse! I was a lorry driver for full year!
I did the worse! I was a lorry driver for full year!
You get a free lorry drivers license though right? And that's worth like thousands of euros.
... how long does this house arrest last for? you can't do jack shit (depending on the timetable that is)
173 days maximum, always half of the remaining civil service days. Civil service is always 347 days. So in case you say "farewell to arms" after half a year of civil service, you will get a quarter year sentence etc. The sentence is "day to day" so no 1/2 sentence for first timers or so. Also the timetable often gives possibility to study or even work, but things like going randomly to a walk on a sunny day aren't possible.
You Fins have Russia to worry about, what boggles my mind is that we got the same thing going in Denmark, and I really hope it doesn't have anything to do with germany :v: Do you fins also use conscription for your preparedness Agency ???(google translated, but in case of bush fires, flooding or other catastrophies)

They basically have a pact going saying that they'll fuck each other up if one invades the other, but Finland will fuck up whoever tries to invade Russia using Finland as a staging area.

It was obviously in the best interests of Finland, but they were much more willing to turn on NATO rather than join it/stay 100% neutral. It wasn't "evil commie bastard" of them, they just wanted to keep their people safe.
