if you're looking for an accurate depiction of EOD do not watch Hurt Locker, as a movie it's alright but highly overrated. there's a good many reasons why a lot of people in the army hate it
you're better off reading Eight Lives Down
It's an anti-military, anti-war movie. Not surprising a lot of service men dislike it.
Also, the only accurate depiction of war you'll ever see on a screen is through a documentary. Don't watch a fucking movie to understand what a war was like. Even if they give that bullshit lying tag at the beginning, "Based on real events".

i think everyones main problem with it is that it shows 3 guys rolling around iraq in a humvee practically by themselves and making really stupid hollywood moves. and then stumble upon a group of brits who all happen to get shot, take over their .50 and kill everything
if it's supposed to be anti-war then they did a good job of trivializing a lot of it

This.
The Hurt Locker is a bit of fun but it's a far cry from realistic.
Thanks for the movie suggestions guys. Most of the war movies I have in my collection are from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Many of the "newer" ones I have are from the mid-late 80's and early 90's. But yes, Saving Private Ryan is a pretty good movie even though it has some historical inaccuracies (what war movie doesn't?)
I have both The Pacific and BoB. They are both good miniseries, but I was mainly talking about feature length movies. BoB I have seen at least six times and it still holds up. I have both Clint Eastwood movies as well and they are also good, especially regarding the action, but I feel like it gets a bit too much in the way of a proper story, at least in Letters From Iwo Jima. The other one I haven't really seen since it came out.
IMO The Hurt Locker was a bit too "Hollywood" for my taste, and felt a bit too much like a movie, if you know what I mean. It's still not a bad movie by any means, I just don't know how it got so many awards.
I have a suggestion for you guys as well. It's a Danish documentary called "Armadillo", covering the fighting and the feeling on the front line in Afghanistan with lots of different allies at your side.
The crew managed to capture some really intense battle footage, while also capturing the camaraderie of the Danish soldiers. It has English subtitles, and perhaps even options for getting the narrator in English.
Sorry for derailing, I didn't mean to turn this into a movie discussion.
Armadillo is really good, and it's also on Netflix. Resterepo is also another good modern-war documentary.
If you want some good books though, Check out Black Edelweiss, Jump into Hell, Infantry Aces, Helmet for My Pillow, Tigers in the Mud, Stranger to Myself, and The Dead and Those Who Are About to Die. All are seriously good WWII Biographies and Autobiographies. "Infantry Aces" and most anything else written by Franz Kurowski, reads like fiction but is based off personal accounts. So it makes for a really good and really interesting read while remaining completely factual.
Restrepo is a must

The sad thing about these WW1 group shots is knowing that everyone in them is dead.
For example these two:

Everyone in them is dead.
Most WWII photos are like that. Especially ones from the Eastern front.

See all these Germans, fresh from boot camp? This was the day they were deployed to the eastern front and absolutely none of them returned home.
Keep in mind that there were more Military deaths on the eastern front alone than there were military deaths during the entirety of WWI.
Well of course they're all fucking dead, WWI went from 1914 to 1918, and I'm sure a lot of the soldiers who fought in it were born in the late 1800s to the very early 1900s. That's like saying "Hey, look at this picture of Confederate soldiers from the Civil War! All the people in this picture are dead!" If what you meant to say was "Everyone in this massive group shot was killed in action/died in combat shortly afterwards" then yes, that would be sad.

Could you imagine someone in one of the back rows tripping forward? They'd probably tumble over multiple people and cause more people to topple over. That'd be pretty scary.
