I missed their last air show here because of the sequester.
So glad the blue angels are flying again. I missed their last air show here because of the sequester.
I haven't seen them since I was 8. The local air show use to be in June after school ended, but they moved it to September and I was too busy with school from that point on.
Cave in Middle Earth aka New Zealand:
Explanation: Look up in New Zealand's Hollow Hill Cave and you might think you see a familiar starry sky. And that's exactly what Arachnocampa luminosa are counting on. Captured in this long exposure, the New Zealand glowworms scattered across the cave ceiling give it the inviting and open appearance of a clear, dark night sky filled with stars. Unsuspecting insects fooled into flying too far upwards get trapped in sticky snares the glowworms create and hang down to catch food. Of course professional astronomers wouldn't be so easily fooled, although that does look a lot like the Coalsack Nebula and Southern Cross at the upper left ...
No shit, the ABB logo was just a joke. [editline]1st September 2014[/editline] Have some Nuclear Power from Olkiluoto, Finland: It takes about an hour for one of the boxy units (OL1 and OL2) to produce as much electricity as the wind turbine produces in a year. Or half an hour for OL3 (the round one in the distance) once it's completed.
Those are some cool looking nuclear power plants, they almost look like coal plants. Much less "dreadful" than ordinary designs with those characteristic chimneys(?). Could work wonders for people against nuclear, as in make them less afraid or something.
Or half an hour for OL3 (the round one in the distance) once it's completed.
how long is that thing going to take anyway

However they're mandatory for nuclear power plants which have no other mean of cooling, like access to sea water like Olkiluoto has. And a lot of cooling is needed indeed: 76 cubic meters of sea water goes trough the cooling channels every second. After leaving the plant the water has warmed up some 10 degrees of celsius, so the sea near the plant is ice-free during winter. Also, those "smome stacks" that Olkiluoto units have are actually just for ventilation. [editline]1st September 2014[/editline]
how long is that thing going to take anyway
Latest info is that it'll be finished in 2016, but I'm a bit skeptical about that too. The unit itself is pretty finished and they're mainly working on the automation systems.

If people got over their radiophobia they could enjoy swimming all year round.
Yes, well, most people don't understand that. Still, do people swim in the warm sea? If people got over their radiophobia they could enjoy swimming all year round.
Well a lot of people here enjoy ice swimming during winter so it's not much of a difference. Ice-free water makes fishing during winter more versatile tough, and from what I've heard that's being utilized near Olkiluoto. The warm water is also used in small scale to grow crayfish and wine.

This is due to the city's strict regulations which prevent buildings from ruining the picturesque view of the desert."
