So here's my first ever contribution to the thread, Japanese woodblock propoganda prints from the First Sino-Japanese War Maybe people think these Japanese woodblock prints are classy, but this was cheap, lowest-common-denominator popular art to the core. Artists could churn out a dozen of these things every month, and even though the war lasted less than a year, hundreds of these works were created, all mass produced for middle class people all over the country. The visual language of it all is pretty clear--heroic, handsome, modern Japanese crushing cowardly, ugly, backwards Chinese. Making "your people" look good and making "their people" look bad is a pretty standard part of propaganda, but it stands out just how openly brutal the Japanese are to the Chinese. I mean, this is what they depicted when they were getting themselves pumped up for war, this is their idealized image of how it went down. It makes a modern viewer kinda feel sorry for the poor bastards. "Shit's sinking, yo."

If you thought the first Sino-Japanese war was brutal to the Chinese, the second one was a hell of a lot worse. Among the highlights of the war crimes: - The Three Alls policy, 'Kill all, Loot all, Burn all', implemented from 1942 onwards which resulted in the deaths of an estimated 2.7 million civilians. - Bombing was often completely indiscriminate, or in some cases deliberately targeted at civilians. In the first two days of bombing raids in the war over 5,000 civilians were killed. - During the 4 months of the Battle of Wuhan, the Emperor gave executive authorisation to launch gas attacks 375 seperate times. - Unit 731, commanded by Shiro Ishii took place in human experimentation with POWs and civilians, including vivisection, flamethrower and explosive weapons testing, and the testing of biological warfare including anthrax weapons, cholera and the fucking bubonic plague. No officers of Unit 731 were prosecuted after the war, as they agreed to turn over their research to the Allied forces. - There was also the infamous 'Rape of Nanking', in which during which Imperial Japanese soldiers, over a period six weeks systematically killed between 50,000 and 300,000 civilians, committed mass rape of an estimated 20,000 women, regardless of age, looted anything worth looting and probably a whole lot that wasn't, and then at the end of these six weeks claimed to have 'restored order' to the city and ordered all civilian refugees to return to their homes. Prince Asaka and General Matsui, two of the commanders responsible for the Imperial Japanese Army in the city were recalled to the mainland for their actions, but neither recieved any particular repercussions. Prince Asaka remained on the Supreme War Council and was even promoted to General in 1939, while General Matsui retired soon after his return. Prince Asaka escaped prosecution after the war due to an earlier agreement with the Allies that granted him immunity to such matters. Surprisingly, Matsui was said to be 'dismayed' with his troops' actions in the city. He reportedly said to a civilian aide "I now realize that we have unknowingly wrought a most grievous effect on this city." Not exactly knights in shining armour, were the Imperial Japanese Army.
These guys were also apparently chill with Soviet civilians as they had only joined up to fight communism, not the people themselves.
Most of the men who joined up with the Wehrmacht joined up to fight Bolshevism and weren't interested in a war of extermination. But when the Partisans started interrupting convoys and kill their friends, most troops stopped caring and the indiscriminate executions and murder of civilians became common place. I'm sure these Spanish troops took part in burning down a few villages that partisans were hiding in.
You probably thought this act was a war crime? No! Just partisans.

Pizarro brought with him 169 men and 69 horses. Atahualpa, in Cajamarca with his army of 80,000 troops, heard that this party of strangers was advancing into the empire. The Spaniards invited Atahualpa to visit Cajamarca to meet Pizarro, which he resolved to do the following day.[11] Meanwhile, Pizarro was preparing an ambush to trap the Inca: while the Spanish cavalry and infantry were occupying three long buildings around the plaza, some musketeers and four pieces of artillery were located in a stone structure in the middle of the square.[12] The plan was to persuade Atahualpa to submit to the authority of the Spaniards and, if this failed, there were two options: a surprise attack, if success seemed possible, or keeping up a friendly stance if the Inca forces appeared too powerful. According to eyewitness accounts, Valverde then spoke about the Catholic religion but did not deliver the requerimiento, a speech requiring the listener to submit to the authority of the Spanish Crown and accept the Christian faith.[18] At Atahualpa's request, Valverde gave him his breviary but after a brief examination, the Inca threw it to the ground; Valverde hurried back toward Pizarro, calling on the Spaniards to attack.[19] At that moment, Pizarro gave the signal; the Spanish infantry and cavalry came out of their hiding places and charged the unsuspecting Inca retinue, killing a great number while the rest fled in panic.[20] Pizarro led the charge on Atahualpa but managed to capture him only after killing all those carrying him and turning over his litter.[21] Not a single Spanish soldier was killed.
Either way, here's a Spanish ghost town, a common issue there, with 4 million empty houses, and in all of Europe, there's 11m.
