Nobody here posts war photos because they're some sort of war or gore fetishist or because they're trolling. I take a genuine interest in them and I post them here because of that.
The 3rd-century Great Ludovisi sarcophagus depicts a battle between Goths and Romans.

An enormous coalition consisting of Goths (Greuthungi and Thervingi), Gepids and Peucini, led again by the Heruli, assembled at the mouth of river Tyras (Dniester).[53] The Augustan History and Zosimus claim a total number of 2,000–6,000 ships and 325,000 men.

Learning of the approach of Claudius, the Goths first attempt to directly invade Italy. They are engaged near Naissus by a Roman army led by Claudius advancing from the north. The battle most likely took place in 269, and was fiercely contested. Large numbers on both sides were killed but, at the critical point, the Romans tricked the Goths into an ambush by pretended flight. Some 50,000 Goths were allegedly killed or taken captive and their base at Thessalonika destroyed.
The battle ensured the survival of the Roman Empire for another two centuries. In 270, after the death of Claudius, Goths under the leadership of Cannabaudes again launch an invasion on the Roman Empire, but were defeated by Aurelian, who however surrendered Dacia beyond the Danube.

In Medieval and Modern Spain, the Visigoths were believed to be the origin of the Spanish nobility (compare Gobineau for a similar French idea).
The Spanish and Swedish claims of Gothic origins led to a clash at the Council of Basel in 1434. Before the assembled cardinals and delegations could engage in theological discussion, they had to decide how to sit during the proceedings. The delegations from the more prominent nations argued that they should sit closest to the Pope, and there were also disputes over who was to have the finest chairs and who was to have their chairs on mats. In some cases, they compromised so that some would have half a chair leg on the rim of a mat. In this conflict, Nicolaus Ragvaldi, bishop of Växjö, claimed that the Swedes were the descendants of the great Goths, and that the people of Västergötland (Westrogothia in Latin) were the Visigoths and the people of Östergötland (Ostrogothia in Latin) were the Ostrogoths. The Spanish delegation retorted that it was only the lazy and unenterprising Goths who had remained in Sweden, whereas the heroic Goths had left Sweden, invaded the Roman empire and settled in Spain.
I don't know about the war stuff, on one side historically interesting stuff or tragic situations that result from war are very moving and I think it belongs in here just as much as awesome nature or great inventions, it broadens my horizon and makes me think.
On the other side there is more than enough pictures where there is just a Fighter-Jet or tanks or war scenes without any context and these are the ones that rub me the wrong way. They are supposed to inspire awe because the people who post them think they are great inventions or majestic or heroic or whatever but in the end this ... kind of glamour of military equipment and fighting is either really disgusting to me or boring because I see nothing glamorous or auxiliary in the singled out act of fighting each other.
Stuff like this:

The world is full of wonderful and moving scenes and I don't like glamourizing war situations without any context by deeming them "auxiliary".
I can't stop people from posting them but at least I can give my opinion.
tl;dr:
War scenes with context, no problem.
Stuff like "omg look how cool this tank/jet/gun looks" - not so cool.
tl;dr:

This. We should put stuff like that in the cool/ugly weapons thread, guys.
On the whole idea that everything posted here is offensive or depressing... I already gave my thoughts on this sort of thing when it came up around 9/11:
Both posters and viewers on this thread need to have a mature level of discretion. That being said, while posters should not post images that are blatantly shocking, the viewer is expected to be responsible over deciding what types of content they chose to view. Likewise, a poster shouldn't have to sweat over putting fourty or so trigger warnings on his post before sending it, and the viewer isn't expected to be a jaded loser who enjoys gore.
I'm sure it's been established that the topic of this thread is basically anything that isn't meant to be humorous, so that means most things go here. It's just a matter of fact that life is full of absurdity, madness, insanity, and the disturbing. I think it is more of a problem with the viewer not being able to handle that fact rather than the poster needing to restrain himself.
I could also add that content of which is more jovial and cheerful should be posted in LMAO pics even if it is not necessarily humorous. Cute kittens and puppies fall under this category, I think. I also think that it is only because war/military technology and culture interests so many facepunch users that it is most frequently posted here.

"Ruckmarsch". A Tiger crew is stranded on the wrong side of the Seine river during a mass German retreat away from American forces after they escaped a mass encirclement. All the bridges on the Seine had been destroyed so the only way over was via raft, meaning the Tiger can't cross. The crew stands atop their tank and desperately debates on what to do.
I don't see a desperate debate, there's guys posing for the picture and one person telling someone something.

It used to only admit children aged at least 5.
