I love how people still think we fake these images. It'd probably be cheaper to go to space than get the technology good enough to artificially make this kind of imagery.
You could just commission a really good digital artist to make an image similar to those for $100 or less. So no, it wouldn't be cheaper. Do not interpret this as me claiming to be one of those crazies who believes they're fake images, I'm just sayin' :v:

HST raws are usually 4096x4096, and they usually stitch together several raws to give some ridiculously high-res images (I swear I've seen one that was like 16K across). That would be pretty hard to fake, especially with the number of Hubble images there are.
One or two images sure, but with the amount of data NASA produces daily It would be cheaper to just do it.
One shuttle launch costs $540 million per mission. The total cost of the actual 30-year service life of the shuttle program through 2011, adjusted for inflation, was $196 billion. A good quality fake picture like that would surely cost more than $100, a lot more than $100. But mass producing them would be cheaper, so let's make it $100 per picture, still. To match the price of the real launches of the shuttle missions (ONLY the shuttle missions. We'll ignore countless rocket launches beginning from Sputnik and ending at Orion a few days ago), you would have to make 1.96 billion photos. With the average time of editing of 10 hours (much more for the first few, to set up props and make a library of assets, but then less for every further one), you'd have to spend 2.2 million years to produce them, 49 million pages of Auxiliary pics to post them and 62 years of scrolling to view them. Bring your piss bottles.

[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c6/Conseil_Tenu_par_les_Rats.jpg[/t]
Belling the cat The fable concerns a group of mice who debate plans to nullify the threat of a marauding cat. One of them proposes placing a bell around its neck, so that they are warned of its approach. The plan is applauded by the others, until one mouse asks who will volunteer to place the bell on the cat. All of them make excuses. The story is used to teach the wisdom of evaluating a plan not only on how desirable the outcome would be, but also on how it can be executed. It provides a moral lesson about the fundamental difference between ideas and their feasibility, and how this affects the value of a given plan.
Quite old, but very clever and well done. Though I could post this here as well. Someone composed an small orchestral accompaniment to a cat playing the piano. Ended up with a short concerto.

Store mannequins?
Simple mannequins are the best way to go. All of the really detailed ones are just creepy.

I assume it was sent back for repairs.
The Challenger 2 of its time
In one encounter within the urban area a Challenger 2 came under attack from irregular forces with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. The driver's sight was damaged and while attempting to back away under the commander's directions, the other sights were damaged and the tank threw its tracks entering a ditch. It was hit directly by fourteen rocket propelled grenades from close range and a MILAN anti-tank missile. The crew survived remaining safe within the tank until the tank was recovered for repairs, the worst damage being to the sighting system. It was back in operation six hours later after repairs. One Challenger 2 operating near Basra survived being hit by 70 RPGs in another incident
I wonder if it was from tests? The shots on its right side are in a perfect line. Some poor bastard was probably too close and that was his depression limit. Reading up on it that tank took a severe beating and kept going. Couldn't shoot, couldn't rotate its turret, engine caught fire, vision blocks were opaque from heat of rounds exploding off it. Dayum

Half the shit you hear about them is exaggeration, and even when you take that into account they still have more WTF stories than almost any other tank in history.
there's a theory that claims the great sphinx of giza was originally an anubis statue. i think it makes sense, specially when we look at the proportion of the actual sphinx. i've always thought the head of the sphinx looked dumb because it was too small in comparison to the body: not to mention that the pose/body of the sphinx looks really similar to the anubis statues they used to have: of course this is just an ongoing theory in archaeology, but it's pretty interesting nonetheless.

PNG here
That's not big by space pic standards. That's about the raw resolution of most Hubble cameras, and most Hubble shots are composed of several raw images. All the raws are publicly available on a server somewhere, IIRC. It's also obviously CGI in some bits, particularly the stars.
It's also obviously CGI everywhere
FTFY Guys, can we stop the whole "how could it be faked" thing? It's obviously not, so let's forget it. Tthere's constant footage of earth from ISS anyone can view at any time, footage of people floating on said ISS, and my GPS works.

Maybe it's a sign of someone who conquered death, even?
