Shanghai had experienced similar levels of growth, without direct/indirect funding from the oil industry. Probably a check mark in the slave labor box though.

Looks like it could be New York City or Boston.
It's one of the best places one can find a good career and life opportunity for thousands of kilometers in that area. I'd bet it will keep on growing, with people comming in from N-E Africa, Middle East and S Asia.
It's already a magnet for tourists, finance, banking, media and mineral industry.

That's the foreign section of the city, where all the western powers built their embassies back in the 1900s. It's this little clump of old brownstone construction in a modern concrete urban sprawl.

Apparent;y the Chinese are pushing Shanghai to replace Hong Kong as an economic center so they no longer have any leverage.

Holy shit they got so rich they even built a bigger mountain.
So they built 20 of the same building everywhere? I feel like the city needs some nice tall tower that dwarfs the rest so its waterfront isn't so bleh
Vancouver looks like a dystopian city.
Now I want Half-Life 3 to take place in dystopian Canada.

Vancouver has bullshit "view cones" that prevent tall buildings other than the Shangri-La from being built. As a result the whole city has those nasty squat towers everywhere. The views of the mountains are nice but the buildings are ugly as fuck.
Speaking of ugly, while we're in Vancouver allow me to introduce the Vancouver Special. The house design so common in the entire city that in the 80's we were banned from making more of them. (and still are)

Double or single front door, a window next to it, a walk-out balcony with sliding door above and another window of any variety next to that.

Here's mine. Not that impressive, because this was 90s vs now, but 70s was a rather shit time back then. Really 3rd world.

It's amazing to think about how, in under 30 years how much this city has exploded in terms of population growth, technological progress and sheer industrial magnitude.[/QUOTE]
I've only been in the transit at the airport, didn't had time to step outside, so I can't tell much. But while its amazing, it feels too sterile. You don't see much of a culture and history, and its pretty much a giant metropolis in the middle of the desert. Its just tons of shopping malls everywhere, and while I applaud it for trying to be more liberal, Its just feels a tad too clean. I can say the same about my country as well.
And it continues to be a place for the rich. Fuck, all the adverts on board the Emirates flight was about high end fashion and properties.
Damn, I wish I had a copy of this, but I don't.
My high-school history teacher found a Civil War-era photo of the site our school was later built on, and took a photo from the exact same spot. Lined it up perfectly.
The schoolgrounds were an empty field then, but there's a drainage ditch that's in the same place in both. Amazing what doesn't change over a century.
while were talking about Vancouver, I've always admired how close it is too a huge variety of outdoor activities. Around here near Boston if you want to do something other then go to the beach like see some hills or a real forest then its at least a 40 mile drive for you. Mt Seymour or Grouse Mt are high on my places to ski even though they are pretty small ski areas, simply because of the view.
