Nukes are very pretty

I love astro-photography, it sucks that I live in a city and whenever I try to take a picture, it turns out way too bright to be able to make out.
If you shield your eyes from UV.
And from the flash that can blind you And the heat wave that sets anything flammable on fire And the pressure wave that blows apart houses, like in my avatar
And from the flash that can blind you And the heat wave that sets anything flammable on fire And the pressure wave that blows apart houses, like in my avatar
The flash wont cause permanent damage to the eye, it ultraviolet that does that. Feynman watched a nuke test through a truck window cause it absorbed UV.

Towards the end of the gif on the right side of the plume, that vertical black smudge is the USS Arkansas, an almost 600 foot long Wyoming-class dreadnought battleship.
Towards the end of the gif on the right side of the plume, that vertical black smudge is the USS Arkansas, an almost 600 foot long Wyoming-class dreadnought battleship.
That's fucking nuts, nukes are scary as shit, the sheer magnitude of their explosions are just unfathomable.
Looks kinda eerie. [editline]10th July 2013[/editline] Lovecraftian even.

I don't quite comprehend what is going on in this image. What's with the smoke coming off the telephone lines the way it does? And is the explosion physically moving trees in the middle area?
I don't quite comprehend what is going on in this image. What's with the smoke coming off the telephone lines the way it does? And is the explosion physically moving trees in the middle area?
The light from the blast is enough to cause things to start smoldering, causing the smoke. The movement you see is the shockwave - that's why the trees move before the blast hits the camera. I think that shot is from Operation Teapot, but I don't think I've seen that exact footage before. Cool though.
Everything is pretty much vaporising, then a big ass shock wave pushes all the air outwards from the explosion.
I don't quite comprehend what is going on in this image. What's with the smoke coming off the telephone lines the way it does? And is the explosion physically moving trees in the middle area?
The smoke and dust get kicked up by the initial explosion and the flash, the shockwave is so large and powerful that it creates a momentary vacuum by pushing the air out and away from the explosion. Air then rushes back in to fill the vacuum. So when you see the dust and debris fly back toward the epicenter of the explosion, thats them being dragged by the air into the vacuum. Thats at least how what I was taught in science class. [editline]10th July 2013[/editline] oh, just noticed that that wasn't the full gif and doesn't show everything being pulled back.
Have some H.R. Giger. [t]http://pix.avaxnews.com/avaxnews/bc/7f/00007fbc.jpeg[/t][t]http://puu.sh/3zQ3c.jpg[/t][t]http://pix.avaxnews.com/avaxnews/cd/7f/00007fcd.jpeg[/t]

it's kinda odd seeing only the lava animate and not the clouds of steam/smoke in the background.

Should have made Peking Duck instead
Forgot all about aux pix ]
This picture reminds me of the Skaarj Mothership mission from UT2k4.
Since we are doing artists as well in here, have Joe Fenton. One of my favourite artists. Dude's incredible.
I give you frost blossoms, made when water in a long stem expands and makes long narrow cracks: Then I give you glass gem corn. A corn strain bred to make the natural colour differences in corn highly exaggerated:
