We used this to start campfires in the Boy Scouts, pretty nifty.
Soviet Po-2 The most produced bi-plane of all time. Most famous for being the war bird of the NightWitches despite being incredibly outdated. The NightWitches were a Soviet bomber squadron during WWII consisting of all female pilots and crew. Despite being equipped with biplanes meant for training and crop dusting, they utilized their low profile, low maximum speed, and low armament to do night bombing and recon. The aircraft had a bad habit of it's engine just cutting out, so they would use this to their advantage to glide in (without the engine roaring at night they'd be harder to notice) and drop their bombs, restart the engine, then GTFO. The Po-2's maximum speed is slower than a BF109 and FW190's stall speed, so they were tough to shoot down. Because the aircraft was meant for crop dusting, there weren't any hardpoints for bombs, rockets, or any munitions at all. So the passenger could only carry 2 bombs at a time, so they would do multiple sorties in one night just to drop enough bombs to do damage. Because of that, each pilot in the regiment had at least over 1,000 sorties. A handful even received Hero of the Soviet Union medals. This probably isn't the place for this stuff, but if you guys want I can make a post or 2 about the only 2 female ace pilots.

And here's the closest we've got in the western world at the moment.

whats up with those arms next to it
whats up with those arms next to it
It's from an anime series called Macross, specifically the latest one called "Macross Frontier". It's a space fighter that turns into a mech; pretty rad if you ask me.
whats up with those arms next to it
It's Macross, I believe. It's Japanese mechs that turn into jets (and other stuff? i haven't watched it yet), so I guess the arms just kind of stick out in the show as well? Either way it feels like the toy versions of Transformers, where they've got all these bits sticking out so that the vehicle form words but make the robot form look a bit awkward. Still, why are the arms there if it's paraplegic?
Oh man that looks nice. Still, why are the arms there if it's paraplegic?
The picture on the top right is in the mode called "GERWALK". It's meant to allow the aircraft to land VTOL style into a combat zone, but it also increases it's agility at low altitudes, so it's pretty handy for high speed-low altitude combat. It can also be used as a brake of sorts during space combat.
So, is that mid-transformation or do they actually fight like that sometimes?
yeah they go into combat like that relatively often, especially in urban environments because it makes strafing between buildings a breeze [t]http://hanifnorman.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/gattai-macross-frontier-01-1280x720-h264-9cd36e28_200804182059461.jpg[/t]

This is what reddit is for
This is what reddit is for
i'm confused what you mean does reddit get their interesting pictures from this thread?
This is what reddit is for
by all rights, everything we are doing on this forum could be done on reddit or 4chan, who gives a shit.
Reddit's a content aggregator, everything shows up on a place like that eventually.

Auxiliary Pics discussion: Where does everyone get their pictures? I get mine from Tumblr and when I'm feeling lazy/shameless I'll grab something from the front page of Imgur.
I upload them directly from my noggin
