Here's the problem. We can only 'see' planets outside of our solar system by seeing their gravity fields with our telescopes - That is, how the light of the backdrop stars and the star they're orbiting is bent or warped by the gravity of the planet. We've got no way to visually see any far-away planets with enough detail to tell whether they have artificial light on them.
Not really, no. The gravity from a planet is too weak for that to be noticeable. We do, however, do that essentially in reverse. If they're in a correct alignment, the gravity from a star can magnify a planet enough to allow us to detect it.
Actually apparently planets can be detected the way you describe, except it often requires a star to align as well to contribute to the lensing.
If we look at how much light our planet generates in the universe and do a scan through all planets that we can see with the same amount of light, would there be a bigger change of finding a population just as advanced as ours is right now, if we of course also calculate in the size of the planet you're looking at?
Also i should really quit smoking i'm high every single day, but i can say i have attention deficit disorder and have a really hard time finding shit to do when i'm not working (at least 65 hours a week, of which 40 are spent driving).
also, wonderful thread guys, love browsing it and should return by posting some interesting stuff.. how about some really cool typography, would that be alright?
The normal light radiating from Earth is by far drowned out by the light from the Sun. And even when it comes to radio transmissions, unless they are aimed directly at one spot they're only strong enough to really be sensed out to ~0.3 lightyears or so. The methods we use to detect other planets currently are far less straightforward because the stars they orbit drown them out for the most part.

He ended it because he discovered that due to bootlegs and not copyrighting his stuff, he had lost a lot of the rights to his own series involving merchandising. He ended it because of that.

The main method we use is still Doppler spectroscopy, though. As a planet orbits around a star, the star also orbits around the system's barycentre. This small movement can be sufficient to very slightly (but measurably) displace the star's spectral lines due to the Doppler effect.
Of course, you're a physics major so I suppose you already know that :V:

i'm done.
Are you guys serious right now? As far as I know nobody in the photo even died. Seriously can't win with you people.

That's not the point. We don't want to see that. It's disturbing.
So am I the only one who's fine seeing them?
It's not about being fine. I've seen far more gruesome things, I am not getting PTSD from this, but when I surf the Auxiliary Pics thread, I obviously don't want to see pictures of people being killed and sad and shit. If you want to post this shit so much, make a thread and maybe you'll get that audience you desire so much Trunk Monkey. You are not welcome here with this shit.

Honestly you (Trunk Monkay to be clear) may as well do this since people won't stop throwing a fit and whining about it suddenly. If you do, you should link it here though. I find a lot of your posts here rather interesting and would be interested but I rarely read threads I'm not already subscribed to or are news threads at the moment.

I don't mind either, I posted something from WW1 a few pages ago and nobody complained.
and AFAIK, the Photos that shook the world thread is dead, there's no reason to post there because nobody goes there anymore.

Yeah and I wonder why. Didn't many of the German soldiers go over the winter in summer equipment too?

I don't have any problems with the sad pictures.
I do, however, think Trunk Monkey's acting like whiny child.

Scanned in about 1/3rd of those Transport for London Postcards I had. I just chose the ones I like. I also have another folder of old advertising postcards if people are interested.
