A pretty decent indicator of how "healthy" a time period was, is by how many children people had. Back in the early 1900's, people didn't have 12 children cause they couldn't afford condoms, they had 12 because 8 of them would die by the time they were 3 years old.

My grandfather's best friend has agent orange poisoning, it's a horrible thing. He has diabetes so he needs to maintain his weight for his health but agent orange poisoning acts up most when you're burning fat. He's in a damn if you do, damned if you don't situation that has confined him to a wheelchair for the last decade (living in a cheap motel might I add because that's all he can afford on what the state gives him) and continuously takes a toll on his health.

In all seriousness, previous generations had it really fucking tough, and saying you want to grow up going through the same shit they did is pretty fucking offensive to those who actually made it through it all. Especially if you were unlucky enough to be 18 during any of the US' major conflicts in the 20th century. My grandfather served as a Ranger in the Pacific Theater during WWII, and seeing some of his photos and stories makes me honestly wonder how he remained a functioning member of society after the war. The only thing that kept him going was my grandmother and 60 years of alcohol abuse.
