I remember reading somewhere that the USA and USSR governments were unofficially "friends" and at the same time pretending to be enemies in public to avoid the whole problem with "At war with one communist country and having propaganda campaigns against communism, but at the same time supporting another equally communistic country to avoid having to fight two countries instead of one".
I assume the US wanted to avoid having to fight two super powers and the USSR probably didn't want to take a side so they could be strong enough to take on the winner if it came to that or they had problems of their own in Europe.

158th bomber memorial, which had the bomber "Friday the 13th" flying with them. I ain't gonna summarize that bomber and her crew's achievements so go read about them yahselves.
