it looks relatively intact. did they order them to "bomb everything but the church"? They're now doing it to scare the shit out of people (around the 2 minute mark)
it'd be great if that thing was made to drop a few inches or shudder just to really scare everyone
Probably late but

While we're talking about bombed cities Ypres before and after WW1
I've been to Ypres, helped repaint a memorial and found a dud hand grenade in a field.

I was at that too, that photo makes it look small. I've been to Ypres too. We also went to the place where Canadian soldier John McCrae allegedly wrote his poem "In Flanders Fields".
I really should contribute more, I have a folder with about 300 wallpapers that I personally picked out, does anyone want me to upload it? Agree or disagree for yes or no
it looks relatively intact. did they order them to "bomb everything but the church"?
One of the reasons is that mostly incendiary bombs were used, burning everything who were able to burn. The cathedral survived because she was made of stone, who can't be taken into flames. That's also why the buildings still have walls.
it looks relatively intact. did they order them to "bomb everything but the church"?
They would leave large churches and cathedrals like that intact because they make excellent landmarks. The church still sustained around 14 hits throughout the war though, and was still standing.
here's another angle of the same scene [editline]12th October 2013[/editline] Dresden got hit so bad it's almost surreal. if you've ever wondered what a real life version of the scenery in Fallout or Warhammer or the Terminator future war battlegrounds would look like, here's as close as you get
The firebombing of Dresden was really nasty. Some claim the death toll was higher than Hiroshima and Nagisaki combined, but realistically it was less than that. There were so many bodies because of the fire bombing, that they couldn't dig holes deep enough for mass graves. They had to bring in troops with flamethrowers to burn all the bodies. Are there any more of those WWII pictures combined with what that place looks like in the present?

I love images like that, showing then and today. Not just in war, either.

Sorry to annoy you even more: The bombing of Rotterdam. The aftermath. 67 years later. Almost 1000 people died in the bombing and 30000 people lost their homes. But the bombing did result in one good thing. It allowed the centre of the city to be rebuilt, with modern architecture. I've been there and it looked just like what people expected the future to look like 30 years ago.
Do those cool spotlights symbolize anything or are they just for effect?
Well, that picture was taken on 14 may 2007, exactly 67 years later. It's to memorialise the bombing. The worst part about the bombing is that the Netherlands was neutral and signed a peace treaty with the Germans. The German bombers were on their way the UK, but turned around above the North Sea and proceeded to their actual target, Rotterdam. The UK had a policy of only bombing military targets and infrastructure, but they abandoned this policy on the 15th of May, 1940.
basically the only reason Rotterdam got bombed was due to bad communication, as the signal to cancel the bombardment came in after the bombers where already unleashing hell down below.
This Hat I want it
basically the only reason Rotterdam got bombed was due to bad communication, as the signal to cancel the bombardment came in after the bombers where already unleashing hell down below.
Well, it wasn't exactly a signal to cancel the bombardment, just to postpone it by 3 hours.
