I think this has been posted before, but it's just so cool

I love art like that, that requires a lot of thought and effort.
I was at the Dali museum in Barcelona, he made some of these, they were awesome

I've read that story but I always had a bit of trouble visualising the creatures described, especially the Shoggoth. These just make the story ten times creepier.
Fucking Lovecraft, man.
i just imagined a rolling, very rapidly slithering mass of dark slime with hundreds of eyes and constantly changing worm-like appendages. also mouths, mouths everywhere
as for the Elder Things, "barrel with a starfish at both ends with tentacles and wings in the mid section" was pretty clear IMO
I think part of the appeal with lovecraft is that most of the monsters are so horrifying mere humans can't visualize them, and if you do you go mad.

Care to tell us what story that is please?
Here's something less creepier.

To me the allure of Lovecraft is how different he is.
I mean in terms of horror you have Frankenstein, Dracula, Werewolves, aliens, etc.
Here you have undefinable cosmic eldritch gods, all big and all powerful, stories of a rock from space that ruins your entire land, and turns it and any living thing within it, into a gray dust.
This is what I like about Lovecraft.

I'll do one better, and [url=http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/At_the_Mountains_of_Madness]link to it[/url] since it is out of copyright.

have you even read a lovecraft story before the descriptions are really vague and dated like "weird" and "indescribable" yeah great description lovecraft i'm on the edge of my chair
I read ATMOM. It's not long at all, but it's like trying to read a solid block wall of unnecessary complicated sentence structure and vocabulary, the time consuming effort of deciphering Lovecrafts style of writing sucks out much of the suspense and atmosphere in the early parts of the book IMO, I had to backtrack several times to ensure I got all the information, and understood what HP were trying to convey. On the other hand, the part were [sp]the Shoggoth chases the scientists[/sp] is more fast-paced and very thrilling to read, and a fantastic payoff, so I guess I have kind of a love/hate relationship with HP.
his works are very VERY overrated and most of the "fans" are sperging out over cthulhu without actually having read it although i don't blame them the writing is shit by today's standards
[editline]14th October 2013[/editline]
i have the lovecraft necronomicon and in 80% of his stories absolutely nothing happens at all, it's not even an anti climax, just nothing even happens
[editline]14th October 2013[/editline]
here's a lovecraft monster for you
"a weird, black indescribable mass of flesh"
just kidding i made it up but that would hit the top 10 lovecraft scary monster list
Finally someone who agrees with me! I think a great majority haven't read the books, yes. It's a shame too, the concept is just so fucking great, but HP's execution is horribly convoluted and stale
On a different note: Here's that folder of wallpapers I talked about. It's about 300, mostly from wallbase.net, picked out from the top list at different times. I have them rotating randomly every ten seconds, since I quicly grow tired of being confined to just one.

There's something for everyone in there, landscapes, fantasy, monsters, animals, macroshots, nature, graphic design, gaming related, funny ones, the works.
the stories are good just don't expect a good twist
[editline]14th October 2013[/editline]
the reason that there are so many visual interpretations of lovecraft's monsters isn't because nobody has lived to see them in the stories or that they were described in a way that could be perceived in many ways, it's because he decided to not really describe them at all
The only stories I liked from Lovecraft were Cold Air and the one were a dude made music with sounds from other dimensions etc, I THINK it was Lovecrafts' work.

i like the one with the color from space or some shit that scientists couldn't describe because it was a "new" color.

i'm 100% sure lovecraft's stories are meant to weird people out and not to scare people[/QUOTE]i kinda agree, dunno why it's called cosmic [I]horror[/I] when it's more like nauseating. the stories aren't really scary but some leave you feeling a bit weird afterwards. The Thing on the Doorstep and Dreams in the Witch House especially. the ending to Dagon was, in context, honestly freaky tho
[editline]14th October 2013[/editline]
of course the thing with Lovecraft in general is that if you're not able to allow the story to suck you in and immerse yourself in the stuff 95%, of course all the "protoplasmic bubbles" shit will sound ridiculous and dumb

That's subjective as heck IMO, I too have the necronomicon and it's fairly obv that the stories aren't about the monsters in themselves.
