i know what you're trying to say but it just straight up looks like a photoshop
Can one ever see galaxies with the naked eye? Even away from cities I only see stars.
[t]https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/s720x720/527935_3029029575730_85088987_n.jpg[/t] well, the background image really reminds me of this one
Then again the milky way does stay pretty much the same for a really long time, so it could just be either that or the original picture.
Can one ever see galaxies with the naked eye? Even away from cities I only see stars.
The only other galaxy you can see with the naked eye besides our own is the Andromeda - and it just looks like a little fuzz. EDIT: and apparently you can see M33 too.
Can one ever see galaxies with the naked eye? Even away from cities I only see stars.
Some. Andromeda can be seen with the naked eye, and M33 (the Pinwheel Galaxy) can be seen in very good conditions. Problem is, Andromeda just looks like a blob in the naked eye, and M33 looks almost like a star. This is a long exposure, so everything is brighter than it would be to the eye, but you can see what both galaxies look like without a scope. Andromeda is on the left, just off the corner of the scope, and M33 is one of the blobs above it.
Can one ever see galaxies with the naked eye? Even away from cities I only see stars.
youd have to be really really really really far away from any light source, like middle of the African Savannah during a new moon or after the moon has set.
I can't say if it's a grim or beautiful depiction of the future.
I went to college with the guy who drew this. His name is Miles Johnston and he's a really great artist. He's done a lot of good stuff; I recommend checking him out!
Usually if I clear the city I'm in by about 30 miles it's enough to see the Milky Way
Really? I've never been able to see it even when I'm 300 miles off shore. Maybe it's a seasonal thing or you just can't see it in the gulf.
Usually if I clear the city I'm in by about 30 miles it's enough to see the Milky Way
I live ten minutes out of a city and I can see it. When I was in Boulder Creek CA I could see it and you were fifteen minutes away form the bay area.
The only other galaxy you can see with the naked eye besides our own is the Andromeda - and it just looks like a little fuzz. EDIT: and apparently you can see M33 too.
Well the Milky Way isn't a "galaxy" from our point of view, it's just a ton of stars stacked on top of each other (visually). You can see it as varying qualities, between white haze and blurry long exposure photograph, in rural parts of the world as far as I know. I live in southern california though so I'm not speaking from experience.

I saw somebody post a scifi story earlier in this thread so I'll share this one http://everything2.com/title/unidentified+objects+%2523003+%2526+%2523024 does anybody have anything more like this? I love this type of sci-fi in a way I can't describe
are all of these real? If so what is the last one?
The cloud formations are pretty rare. Don't know the actual term for them but I've heard people calling them "Van Gogh clouds"

Does anyone have that really nice photo of the punk rocker kneeling down so the small child can touch the studs on their jacket? I've been looking for it but I can't find it anywhere.

Only the English would think that they can conquer the sea.
Could you imagine the destruction that would be made if one of those dykes were to fail?
Could you imagine the destruction that would be made if one of those dykes were to fail?
I don't believe it was very well thought out.
