Then again the milky way does stay pretty much the same for a really long time, so it could just be either that or the original picture.

The only other galaxy you can see with the naked eye besides our own is the Andromeda - and it just looks like a little fuzz.

Some. Andromeda can be seen with the naked eye, and M33 (the Pinwheel Galaxy) can be seen in very good conditions.
Problem is, Andromeda just looks like a blob in the naked eye, and M33 looks almost like a star. [url=http://www.eso.org/public/archives/images/screen/potw1342a.jpg]This is a long exposure, so everything is brighter than it would be to the eye, but you can see what both galaxies look like without a scope[/url]. Andromeda is on the left, just off the corner of the scope, and M33 is one of the blobs above it.

youd have to be really really really really far away from any light source, like middle of the African Savannah during a new moon or after the moon has set.

I went to college with the guy who drew this. His name is Miles Johnston and he's a really great artist. He's done a lot of good stuff; I recommend checking him out!

Really? I've never been able to see it even when I'm 300 miles off shore. Maybe it's a seasonal thing or you just can't see it in the gulf.

I live ten minutes out of a city and I can see it.
When I was in Boulder Creek CA I could see it and you were fifteen minutes away form the bay area.

Well the Milky Way isn't a "galaxy" from our point of view, it's just a ton of stars stacked on top of each other (visually). You can see it as varying qualities, between white haze and blurry long exposure photograph, in rural parts of the world as far as I know.
I live in southern california though so I'm not speaking from experience.

Nothing makes you feel so insignificantly tiny than seeing a whole galaxy in the sky with the naked eye.

The cloud formations are pretty rare. Don't know the actual term for them but I've heard people calling them "Van Gogh clouds"
