So back in the mid 60's the soviets were looking for a machine that were not only able to carry stuff from a coast to another quickly but also to be able to be a mobile, fast, reliable missile Platform. Ships were too slow and vulnérables, planes weren't the most efficient way to do it. So they created another machine, called the Ekranoplane. That machine was using the ground effect to fly a few meters above the water at about 300 knots ( ~550km.h), by generating an air cushion between the hull and the sea. This one was a testbed, called the Caspian Sea Monster They managed to crash it in the early 80's Now this one's the Lun, it still exists, even if not used anymore. Since I saw plane pictures, my aviation-boner kicked up and I felt like sharing one of my favorite planes: the Convair B-36 Peacemaker See that tiny fucker on the left? B-29. AKA the bomber that dropped the nukes on Japan. AKA the biggest plane in World War Two. And the B-36 is bigger than that bitch And I know what you're saying. You're saying "Dacheet those goddamned engines are on backwards!" NO THEY AREN'T THEY ARE SO AWESOME THAT THEY PUSH AIR INSTEAD OF PULL IT. SIX FUCKING PRATT AND WHITNEY WASP MAJOR 3,800 HP ENGINES. SIX. Not only that, but they felt the need to also strap JET ENGINES to it, in conjunction with a total of 22,800 HORSEPOWER And now you're probably bitching that it never saw combat. You know why it never saw combat? Because it was the Peacemaker. Those Ruskies saw that big-ass plane flying and dropped their vodka bottles in fear. The B-36 was SO BIG (how big was it) that one day, the Air Force decided "you know what? Let's put a motherfucking nuclear reactor on this thing to power it." And that's what they did. Those crazy shits added a 3,600 pound nuclear reactor to that shit, and it could still carry bombs with an operational nuclear reactor on board. It was so big that instead of putting guns on the plane, they put guns on a plane on the plane. They put what's known as a parasite aircraft inside the bomb bay, and that little fuck was designed to fall out of the bomb bar with a dude inside and shoot incoming aircraft. How cool was that? (realistic note: the nuclear generator did not power the aircraft (though it probably could have) but was instead used to test radiation on aircraft systems, and the F-85 Goblin was a disaster because it was a load of shit. Also I Realize now how much I curse)

It also had a remotely operated twin 20mm autocannon in the back, so it wasn't completely unarmed. The parasite fighter was attempted because like every bomber ever, there wasn't a fighter with the range to fly escort all the way to moscow and back. B-36 wasn't the first to attempt this either. I saw this thing at the USAF museum (where my cousin works as a curator) and it was massive. Perfectly fitting for the B-36 it was next too.

Since parasite fighters were mentioned earlier, I'll go a little bit more in depth with them and explain their purpose and history. Prior to the invention of the jet engine, the biggest issue for bombers was their escorts. Fighter aircraft just didn't have the fuel capacity to have the range to escort bombers over long distances. It's why Doolittle's raiders had to fly to Tokyo to China without any fighter escort at all. It's also the reason around 9,000 B-17 bombers were lost during WWII. One of the earliest examples of parasite aircraft were actually on blimps and zeplins. They were more or less used for reconnaissance use, but the US experimented with the idea to have blimps be flying aircraft carriers. Another early example is Soviet I-15's and I-16's being attached to a TB-1 or TB-3 bomber. This was called the Zveno project These were almost practical, because you could carry an I-16 with a heavy bomb load under the wing of a TB-3, and then fly the TB-3 to within a few miles of the target and release the I-16. The I-16's engine would have been off or idled the whole ride and then would have still had enough fuel to bomb the target and then fly home. This tactic was actually used against the Romanians during WWII, and the Romanians were so surprised that the short range I-16's were able to fly in and bomb their ports that they weren't even able to fire flak at them. Defensively though, the Zveno project was a failure. The aircraft couldn't reattch due to turbulence and wouldn't be able to effectively escort the bombers. During WWII the Germans came up with their own escort fighter, the ME-328 It would fly atop a DO 217 but was canned due to engine issues, like all late war German tech. And of course comes the most famous and least practical parasite fighters Like the Goblin parasite fighter, the F-84 was experimented with as a parasite fighter with a B-36. [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e5/Republic_YF-84F_inflight_docking.jpg[/t] But like the Goblin, there was no way for the fighter to reattach because of the massive amounts of turbulence under the aircraft. The next interesting one was a attempt where the US tried to have a pair of F-84 jet fighters fly as parasites on B-29 bombers connected to their wingtips (which was insanity). This was code named "tip tow". The B-29 was the "Mother" and the 2 F-84's the "children". These B-29's would fly with a group of B-36's and when enemy fighters appeared, the F-84's would detach and take down the fighters, then reatach and shut down their engines to save fuel. But in 1953 when an F-84 was trying to reattach, it flipped over onto the wing of the B-29 and everyone involved was killed and the aircraft were destroyed. Program was shut down, and that was the last anyone heard of any parasite projects OR WAS IT dun dun dunnnnnnn. Airforce 1 with a parasite fighter in the rear for when SHTF! but of course, never made it off paper because it was designed by a retired USAF col. in the 70's. rip Eventually it was figured out that in-air refueling was 100% easier to use than parasite fighters.
Nazi Germany also had plans for parasite fighters. [t]http://www.luft46.com/mlart/mldbe-3.jpg[/t] This is the Daimler Benz (Yes, they turned to planes) Projekt C. It was designed in early 1945 and features in quite a few "Secret Weapons" games. Also of note is the Projekt B, which was the Projekt C, but outfitted to carry an entire Parasite level bomber. And while we're on the subject of Jetpack Hitler's absolutely outlandish Nazi dreams, here's a Nazi Space Bomber, which reached wind tunnel testing stages. [t]http://www.luft46.com/misc/3bsanger.jpg[/t] [t]http://www.luft46.com/misc/sang3.jpg[/t]
