• Discord: Better than Skype/Teamspeak?

mumble for voice as well here, skype manages to suit my text chat needs but only by having a pretty old version, though that's more because everyone has skype and it's easiest to do that tbh.
Discord is okay for throwing up something quick and using it, e.g., in world of warcraft if you make a raid group and don't have a VoIP server, you can make a discord quickly. I've found the sound quality not as good as mumble though, and I have to question its longevity with who the creator of it is. I prefer mumble all the way, I hate having to download teamspeak or, god forbid, ventrilo to join groups in world of warcraft. Mumble is free and open source, very up to date, excellent sound quality, and truly gives you control over your own server unlike Discord where they control every element of the server and Teamspeak with its back-doors and closed-sourced code. I don't even have skype installed. throwing around the term "botnet" is a bit of a meme, but it really applies to skype. You don't even get something good for putting up with that, it has pretty bad sound quality, and can be a pain to mess with.
Mumble. While the quality of Discord is impressive, I don't like the idea of not being able to actually run your own server.
Don't talk to me about discord until it supports screensharing and video. I do use skype, but I agree that it is a massive festering pile of sold-out shit.
I tried Discord few weeks ago, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get the sound quality to be on par with my Skype. As soon as me or my buddy makes a loud noise the voice would crack really horribly. Also the lack of screen sharing is disappointing. I keep Discord as my backup "calling" software though, but for now I will stick with the Skype.
if you dont use xfire then smh..
Speaking as someone that frequents WAYT's discord, Absolutely.
They each have their specific uses. I like Discord because it's basically the centre-point between IRC, Teamspeak and a forum, but specifically for voice chat I'd say Teamspeak is the best option.
I think we all can agree Skype is a piece of shit.
I think we all can agree Skype is a piece of shit.
I remember how hard it was to find my mates on Skype. Now it's like 10x more difficult, I can't even fucking find the function that allows me to find anyones username.
I haven't used Teamspeak, but it was amazing how quickly Skype became a non-thing after I was introduced to Discord.
Skype is a fucking devil program that fucks with my computer every time I've installed it. Ventrillo is shit and people who still use it need to stop. Discord is like a happy medium between Skype and Mumble. Free, easy, not shit, and the chat rooms aren't bad. Only downside is that you don't own the server, thus you can't mess with stuff as much. Mumble is nice. Pretty bare-bones but without a doubt a good program. Teamspeak is my preferred voice program. I just wish I didn't have to keep four programs installed just to talk to people.
Teamspeak has an old ugly interface. Discord is nice, clean, and very simple and easy to use. Plus it works on all operating systems and even has phone app support.
But can I use it on my Vectrex?
Skype drops fps unreasonably and you need a hosts file for it just to make it bearable. One of my friends calls mumble "hipster skype" and refuses to even try it which is enervating.
Skype drops fps unreasonably.
I haven't noticed anything like that.
if I ever use Skype I just use the embedded one on outlook.com. v:v:v [editline]17th March 2016[/editline] but yeah, for me it's discord all the way. And coding discord bots is fun as well.

Coding bots? To do what, for example? Last I heard Discord was too glitchy to use, but the people I heard that from didn't want to switch over anyway so could've been biased.

As for bots you can make a bot for which you can gamble with, add a personality, use it as a DJ that plays Youtube videos over microphone and probably the trivial stuff like 8ball and Choose.
Discord just doesn't want to cooperate whenever I try and use it. I've been using teamspeak almost exclusively for the past 7-8 years now and before then I used Ventrillo/mumble. I think Mumble has a really ugly UI, but its super flexible though which is nice and Ventrillo is an age old dinosaur. Skype is just convenient as a default communication because almost everyone has the program, any VoIP software however is far better.
There's no contest. I haven't used Skype at all since Discord went up.

Haven't found a need to use any other VoIP program after installing Discord.
Oh yeah also, my friends can join my voice channel on Discord through their browser and don't even need to create a account.
RIP Skype forever.
Is there a planned release date for the update? Or is this just a showcase of future updates?
Well I can only Skype while skype is literally shitting the bed right now that Discord is pretty fucking nice, and that at a point in time you will be able to run your own Discord Servers.
Is there a planned release date for the update? Or is this just a showcase of future updates?
These will be out this year.
not really, it's just some reddit overhyped program to destroy the competition. Also it's not that popular. And i heard that it has worse voice codecs, no video calls. I'd recommend Teamspeak/Mumble for voice, and Google Hangouts for video calls/conferencing/chat ,also Slack, Facebook Messenger(with your close friends) for just text. What's worse is the fact that it's named after My Little Pony antagonist
will probably keep using teamspeak unless discord somehow gets support for the arma radio mods
at a point in time you will be able to run your own Discord Servers.
Where'd you hear that? The devs are very vocal about how they do not plan on ever allowing private servers. They wouldn't be able to sell your information and lock down the future stickers without having full control over the servers.
i heard that it has worse voice codecs
Discord/Teamspeak/Mumble all use Opus Voice but Discord defaults to 64 kbps and can go up to 96, while Teamspeak/Mumble can go up to 128.
Discord is okay if you JUST want to talk to your friends and don't want to deal with any backend. Basically just a replacement for skype. That said TS3 and Mumble easily top it in security and modularity.
