"Ugh this anime just isn't for me, it's so bad that it's only a little above average" As far as what you should watch: Full Metal Alchemist (either one. i suggest brotherhood though) [FMA:B] [FMA] Uchuu Kyoudai [link] Dennou Coil [link] Kokoro Connect [link] Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou [link] Paranoia Agent [link] Samurai Champloo [link] You could alternatively look at this list, which basically just shows what i've watched that you haven't sorted by the highest rating: http://myanimelist.net/shared.php?u1=zerothefallen&u2=heroicpillow&type=anime&o=2#u2

"Ugh this anime just isn't for me, it's so bad that it's only a little above average"
5/10 average isn't actually average. If everything from audio to plot to characters is average, then it's actually bad. If parts of a show is good and other parts are bad or average, then it becomes average because you kind of enjoyed it, but in the end it wasn't all that good, but you could watch it. Nobody wants to watch something that is completely average in every aspect. It's boring as fuck because it brings nothing new nor good to the table. It's like eating a flavourless meal for 12/24 days straight, why would you do that?

Giga-bad? Pretty sure it's just sub-par, bad, very bad, or horrible. If part of a show has equal good and bad parts it usually deserves a 5 because the sum of it's parts essentially cancel out. If a show has virtually no bad parts, it reaches a 9 or 10. If a show has barely any good parts, it reaches a 2 or 3. Basically a 5/10 states that it wasn't bad, and it wasn't necessarily good, but you sat through it, watched it, but wouldn't recommend it to anybody else unless they can overlook the bad qualities it has. I personally cannot find an example of an anime that is "completely average". What I can find is a ton of anime that have a few redeeming qualities mixed in with bad qualities, as well as ton of the opposite. The only thing I can think of that is even close to a "completely average anime that brings nothing new to the table" would be comparing Full Metal Alchemist to FMA:B. Except FMA was released before FMA:B, and both actually worth watching because the plot/story is vastly different between the two. The animation, plot, and art are all subpar in FMA, so why would anybody watch it instead of FMA:B? Well, they are both two different stories with a few intertwining plot points and a large majority of the same characters, so for someone that enjoyed FMA:B it would essentially be a retelling from a "What if this happened instead?" point of view. Either you're just mixing up "average" with "complete copy of existing material", or maybe i'm just not understanding the point you're trying to make.

Pretty much every churned out hollywood movie today is average. They were good, you enjoyed them, but in the end it was a really average experience. You wouldn't recommend it, but you know, it was good, but there is really no reason to watch it even if you won't regret it and you will enjoy parts of it. 7/10 is what I call average/good. Because good is average. "it was good" isn't really that much of a compliment, because that's all it was, it was good, nothing else to it. You can go ahead and watch it but you won't come out after it with any memorable experiences, it was just another movie that was ok to watch. It had it's good points and it's bad points, but it leaves so much room for improvement. Everything could have been better. 5/10 average, which is average average, is bad. If you've managed to make something so average then it will not be an enjoyable experience because everything is average or worse, or maybe that one point was good and then everything else was average or bad and it's dreadfully boring and you'd prefer watching paint dry, because at least it would be a live experience so something could happen that you didn't expect.

So why not rate it a 1/10 then? Would anything be able to reach a 3/10 using this scale? 5/10 obviously covers everything from average to bad, so nothing else is needed. Why not just rate out of 0-5 then if you're only going to use half the scale? so this is bascically your scale then? 10 masterpiece 9 great 8 semi-great 7 Average/good (it has some good points and bad points) 6 a little more than average average and almost average/good 5 average average (aka worse than watching paint dry) 4 this anime has committed a grave sin for existing 3 i would rather wash my eyes out with bleach 2 it gave me cancer 1 i am now dead. it has literally killed me by watching this In your definition for 7/10, you stated "It had it's good points and it's bad points, but it leaves so much room for improvement. Everything could have been better.". That's essentially what I define 5/10 as on my scale. You just seem to have a weighted scale where you usually only manage to use half of it. I did notice that you have rated something less than a 5/10 on your animelist before, but I can't fathom how bad it has to be if it's worse than what you've defined for 5/10.

Whatever wrong it may have is basically the most nitpicky of things. 9 - Great, must watch. Some things could be better but overall it's just goddamn great. 8 - Above average, a very enjoyable experience that is worth recommending. 7 - Good, it's enjoyable but nothing groundbreaking. Your average show, not something I would recommend, works as a timewaster. 6 - Ok, not really enjoyable but it does the job, you can live through it but you shouldn't really watch it unless it really is your thing. Quite mediocre. 5 - Average, just avoid it, it's boring shit I could (if I didn't) fall asleep to. Whatever may be good about it is drowned by all the not-good things. 4 - Bad, this is just simply bad, there is no real redeeming factors about it, but it does have some visible effort put into things here and there. 3 - Really bad, there isn't anything good about it, but they sorta tried. 2 - Horrible piece of shit, did they even try? 1 - There is NOTHING good about this. There are no redeeming factors anywhere. By the way. The 1-5 scale is the exact same as a 1-10 scale. The number is just halved, the scale is the same. A 7/10 is the same as a 3.5/5.
