The best way to learn a language is to learn it by hearing anyways. Podcasts and the like is your best bet.
You don't learn a language as fast if you write glossaries and try to learn grammar before you even know how to talk properly.
Follows the logic of how a child learns. They're not raised up with glossaries and grammar. They are raised up by listening to everyone else and then gradually learning it by themselves and being corrected on their pronunciations and choice of words.
If only I had Japanese speaking friends I could practice off them.

nope
grammar is the glue that holds proper communication together, you are screwed if you dont bother to learn it first
children learn like that because they are simply like a blank canvas, as an adult you have so much crap ingrained within you that you have to either unlearn what you already know (not possible in the case of language) or know the proper way. otherwise you get something like sentence structure which resembles a machine word for word translation
She then went around, and asked every single student, "now why did YOU take japanese?", and I was actually surprised at this... People STILL said shit about anime, "I took this class so I could be like *insert some anime character's name here*", and yes it was some anime character. I'm pretty sure it was something from Naruto because the name sounded all too damn familiar, I believe it was "sasuke" or something.
That's incredibly sad to hear.
Although I guess Japanese classes for adults would be a lot better.

I beg to differ, I live in the Netherlands but I hate the language so I'm bit by bit forgetting words and overall getting worse at it.
I even think in English at this point.
I've only been catching up with Kokoro Connect and Sword Art Online more recently, haven't been able to marathon through a show since I finished FMA: Brotherhood a couple weeks ago.
Recommendations for something short and sweet that will get me back in the mood?

Usagi Drop. If you like everyday stories, you'll like it.
Also, it's (gasp!) not about school. It's about a man in his 30'ies.

Anyone know a good slice of life show that isn't set in high school? I have already seen Usagi Drop and currently watching SpaceBros.

I'll be checking out Hanasaku Iroha out.

Nope. It's a simple fact that learning the grammatical rules and how to write before you learn how to talk will dramatically hold you back and make it hard to learn.
It's also a fact that people that live in a country for a year and two and just learn from being with others and talking to them and trying to talk back learn more than you could ever do with a 1-3 year long class about the language.
By learning through mouth it sticks, you learn the flow and can do simple conversations and manage 90% of all talk we actually do in normal daily life. By learning through glossaries and grammar you learn some specific words sentences and ways to bend, but you forget what rules goes where and what word meant what all the fucking time because you get stuck in the rules and principles rather than the flow and whether or not it sounds right.
that's part of why universities have a trip to the country of the language being learnt included, because otherwise you'd still not know shit
I'm not doing too bad at learning entirely via text at the moment, though I do really need to find someone who actually speaks to start practicing properly before I end up forgetting, because that's how it is
Learn a language with a community of other people learning that language
I know for sure the daily japanese threads on /a/ are pretty good for stuff like this, full of guides and you can get help with whatever you need there
Also, as you learn you can listen to podcasts in said language, I know that helps a lot.

I kind of like the idea on how the English language is just a bunch of transformed words in other languages.
Japanese class experience, really sad and shit.
I'm that douchebag that made a language thread in GD, i've made this offer before, but if anyone, ANYONE, needs help with their current language, or wishes to improve in another one. Just shoot me a PM, i genuinely enjoy helping people. I'm well aware of the strengths of different programs and such. For example, Rosetta stone isn't very good; it's vocab, you learn some grammar and, in the case of japanese, you do not get taught Hiragana, Katakana or Kanji. It's all done through romanji. The same thing, exact same thing is avalible in LiveMocha. No single program can cover every basis. Pimsleur, is great for getting you to speak, and form sentences. Not to mention burning things into your mind. Assimil is good for vocab. Etc. I could learn Japanese for free, no torrents. It'd be a stretch, and most likely slower, but it's possible. Anyway. Don't be a stranger, just ask and you shall recive.

It's interesting, i created that thread in GD to dispel myths like these.
Language is communication. Some people would argue it is just grammar and vocab. At heart, yes, but thinking like this turns language into a task of memorization, and boring drills. Talking to people, even if you get the verbs in the wrong form. Let's use to be for example.
I be good.
I'm good.
See? I can understand that. Fine too, i can correct his english, and he, subconciously, will say i am next time. Learning through mistakes is fine. It's good. It's how we learn. Grammar is not so much as a neccesity as a semi-optional counterpart to vocab. Vocab is the true king. If i do not know how to say apple in french, i can not ask. If i only know the infinitve of "to want" (Voulir), i can still say, Je Voulir un pomme. (I want one apple.) It's a bit odd in english, as it makes sence either way, but in french it is like saying, i to be instead of i'm. I hope i've enlightened you. I should got to bed, it's 12:30.
