At the sleep PKing thing in SAO:
So if you accept the duel with their hand in a safezone their HP can go down
But the duel ends after one hit, that was shown in both the duels that occurred
Or if it doesn't (I think it said there was different kinds of duels), why would you be able to die in a duel, that doesn't make sense
I had a discussion for like half an hour about this and we couldn't figure out how it would work at all.
There's a lot of other stuff I really like about SAO though. Like the motion controlled attacks thing - it's a good bridge mechanic between dynamic motion attacks and typical MMO attack mechanics. If I were doing a game based around melee combat with motion control that's how I'd do it. The rock throwing technique was a cool touch, too.
The fact that you can never see another player's level is weird, though. I swear at times some people said they could see it, too. I'm going to have to marathon it once it's over and compile a list of this shit.
I fucking love game design
It's stated in the ep 5 that they "keep attacking"
They made a huge deal out of it, so that combined with it being called sleep PK means that they can die
Motion control thing shown in ep 1 was cool, but they completely forget about that later
Same with the "not actually feeling pain" as well

I bought the entire thing on DVD, went through it subbed and dubbed, incredibly enjoyable show.
I mean, it has MAFIA MERMAIDS. Nothing gets better than that.

You can't see it normally (outside of a party or guild), obviously
You can't see the levels of your party members (ep 2)
Can't see the levels of your guild members either (pretty much the point of ep 3)
so ye
I kind of like the idea of not seeing another player's level.
In SAO, wouldn't you theoretically be able to send a sleeping player a trade request, force them to accept it, strip them of their equipment and have them accept the trade?
That would be one hell of an easy way to land some yourself some nice gear.
The simple solution as an MMO player would be to never sleep

Duels come in three varieties: First to hit, first to 50% health, and to the death. The last one is self explanatory. At first, 50% health seems like an attractive option, however SAO's health system works in all kinds of convoluted ways so it's not entirely safe. Basically how it works is that there is a lag between taking the damage and it being reflected on your health. So it's possible that the duel will end when your health reaches the 50% mark, but you would have sustained enough hits in that time to drop you down to 0. First to hit is the safest and most common duel rule, and like martial arts tournaments, you need to make a clean hit for it to register. Chipping away with minor or glancing hits do not count. Here's the baka-tsuki translation from volume 1 chapter 13 to back me up:

We started trading blows at blinding speeds. My sword was blocked by his shield; his sword was deflected by mine. Various light trails of different colors appeared and faded continuously around us, while the sounds of our weapons clashing shook the arena floor. A minor blow made it through every once a while, and our HP decreased bit by bit. Even if both players failed to make a clean hit, one would win the moment their opponent's HP fell below 50%.

Is the delay between taking damage and it being reflected in your health explained in the LN?
Anne Hathaway would make a great Faye Valentine.
Is the delay between taking damage and it being reflected in your health explained in the LN?
Yes. In the anime, too.
So as asked before. Why doesn't someone just force a trade with a sleeping player? Or it something just hasn't been covered.
TWO-MIX is super anime

It's not explicitly stated, but the scene right in episode 2 where the guy refuses the potion even though visually he still has health.

That's cool~
Seems weird in a real-life-permadeath game to include duels to the death, though
I think what we can take away from this is that the designer guy is a dick

I thought trapping people within his game and making them play his little game of death was enough.
So as asked before. Why doesn't someone just force a trade with a sleeping player? Or it something just hasn't been covered.
I'm sure the exploit would likely exist within the game's system, but I'm just really speculating at this point.
With the whole sleep PK thing, I think it's pretty stupid that the nerve gear wouldn't have a means of forcing players awake from their sleep.
It seems simple enough so that's either a huge oversight by the game creator or left intentionally for some reason.

Yeah or having the UI not work unless the player is active aka awake.
But I guess for story it's a neat thing but has holes.
Yeah well you can only do that in non-safe areas. So it's pretty much all your fault for falling asleep in a danger zone you stupid fuck who does that in MMOs

That doesn't explain why it's like that though

The beta didn't have real-life-permadeath though
Kirito and Asuna, apparently
Because there's no such thing as trust and/or any sort of humanity left in anyone, right
Kirito never slept outside did he? (Not counting when they fell down the pit, as it was unavoidable.) He was just resting when Asuna fell asleep under the tree, and Kirito kept watch over her.
